People keep saying "How hard is it to get an ID?"

Pretty fucking hard. And that's the damn problem. It's not just a trip down to the DMV, spend half a day to get your ID, and then go home and be ready to vote. You have to have all the right forms--and nobody--even DMV employees--seem to know what the fuck they are. Because several people have had to make SEVERAL trips down to their DMV, bringing different things. And if your name isn't the name on your birth certificate--well you're kinda fucked in a way. At least in some states. Meaning if there was an error on your birth certificate, or if you changed your last name because your parents remarried. And in some areas the hours are FUCKING RIDICULOUS. And I don't mean "It's only open from 9:00 -5:00" I mean in one areas they're only open the fifth wednesday of the month.

Then there's getting to the location. The US doesn't have a great system of public transportation.

The whole system is designed to fuck over poor people. Unfortunately most of them won't give a shit because they have ID's, and they're republicans.

If this is so widespread, where are the names of all those that were actually denied voting privileges? Seems to me with the vitriolic reaction to the results, disenfranchised people would be shouting from the rooftops and be easily identified; it's just not happening.

I;m not sure why anyone would call bs on that, it's old news.  There's no disputing that it did happen, and there's no disputing the intent of what happened.  North Carolinas were so bad they got called out as being "surgically targeted", just three months before election day.  This election was, in part, the culmination of a long running national campaign of targeted voter disenfranchisement.  Wherein the voting rights acts was gutted to make way for obstructionary laws and the removal of polling places.

People might wonder whether or not it mattered. I pointed out in another thread that in a state that swung to Trump, a crucial state, wisconsin, the amount of voters that we -know- were barred from voting was ten times larger than the margin of difference between the candidates.  That the majority of those barred were dems, again, easy to check..because this is just a count of -registered- voters who were disenfranchised.  Maybe the would have voted Trump, but not likely.  Maybe they would have stayed home, but if the same portion of that group stayed home (and/or voted third) as the overal number of dems did nationally, for example...the remainder still would have been enough to defeat trump handily.

The above was over and above any crosscheck nonsense. Crosscheck merely eliminated further votes from an already diminished pool.

My issues with these assholes is their fucking hypocrisy.   The right "defenders of freedom and the constitution", do everything they can to make sure that nobody is denied their second amendment rights, but they do everything they can to deny a people their 15th amendment rights.  I live in a state where I can buy a gun from a third party without showing any ID, but can't vote without ID.

The paperwork to obtain a passport or ID card is just as much a pain in the ass in Europe. I spent a whole day obtaining my certificate of birth, certificate of citizenship to finally get to obtaining the new passport itself.

I don't see the difference in the paperwork as much as I see it in different work regulations, not allowing for dropping out for a few hours without losing money, public offices not being available everywhere, public transport not being available everywhere, as you already mentioned. If push comes to shove in our parts, the worst thing that could happen is taking a day of paid leave - out of the five weeks of paíd vacation that is the general law of the land in most if not all European countries.

It's also different because the US doesn't have anything like a central registry, you aren't required to have personal identification and you aren't required to register at your place of home. What Europeans often overlook is that major difference. Since I'm registered at a certain place, I'm registered to vote at a certain district office. And since I'm required to posess personal identification, I have to bring that with me in order to prove my identity and to be able to vote.
