God created the world in 7 days. Define "Day"

They keep harping about god being all-loving and yet there is a hell?
Then they harp on about him being all-powerful and yet the devil is still around. Plus creating the universe in 7 days implies that he isn't all powerful.
They harp on about god being all-knowing and yet they say god designs but if you know everything why would you need to design anything? Also whats the point in prayer if he already knows what you want?

None of it makes any sense.

I was browsing the forums and came across a mention of how christians always say "god created the universe in 7 days" but, what is a day exactly? He created the universe in 7 earth days? A day is different on every planet, it's longer shorter etc etc, so we measure the time of a day from that on earth by itself?

Evidently this "7 days" crap is further proof that the creation story was created by earth bound humans who believed the world was flat and had no notion of the time differences in terms of a day as they appear on other planets.

I'm throwing that out there; another huge flaw in the story Wink

According to the biblical story, god created the earth and the universe in 6 days. The 7th day he used to rest and bless everything he had done.

Of course, you are correct in saying this story was created by humans of the time ignorant of many natural facts we now know largely thanks to advancements in science.

In other flaws of the story, supposedly god spends the majority of the 6 days creating everything on earth and only spends around half of the fourth day creating the rest of the universe. As we all know, this planet is only an insignificant speck of microscopic dust in the scope of the entire known universe but god has to somehow spend nearly 90% of his creation time on it?

Also, just to show you the entire thing is bullshit, god says "let there be light" on the first day, but according to the Genesis story, he does not create the sun until the fourth day. So where did the light come from in the first place?

It only takes the mind of a three year old to realise the whole Genesis creation story is illogical and laughable.
Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...

Why does something all powerful need to rest? Especially after doing just six days of work after sitting around for an eternity doing fuck all. The polish have got a better work ethic.

RE: God created the world in 7 days. Define "Day"
I've actually read and participated in discussions on this subject with Christians in the past. One of the more popular explanations is that a "day" is measured differently, to the point that since God is a god, 1 day equals roughly 100 years.

Another argument I've seen is that the "day" is not a literal meaning of time, but to define a "segment" of what God did during that "time span" or "moment."

For example, the first "day" was him summoning light.

One other argument is that God sees the passage of time faster than us... in the same category as my first statement.

What I want to know is... How exactly do Creationists and Fundamentalist Christians argue that "God is outside of time and space, and can't be measured, observed, etc" (a topic I could go into by itself, but sticking on point) but at the same time... Place God in our universe in the very bible they preach from, and also... apply concepts such as "time" to him as well?

What i mean is, how exactly is an immortal God, who is immune to the effects of time, and is suppose to be outside of time... able to be measured by time?

This makes no sense. Even if it's "relative time" from God's perspective... technically God is the beginning and the end, and time has already passed by in his eyes... So how exactly would he keep track or measure a time period that would seem like a memory, or future event that hasn't happened yet, and both at the same time, and be in constant phase or be aware of how "long" it took him to do something. Everything would be instantaneous as if it already happened.

It still is odd to me that God took longer to create the Earth than the Universe according to the Bible.....

Something cute I heard but, would like to confirm better. Apparently in the Arabic texts we translate from Genesis is more of a poem than an outright story. It follows like a poem in their language but, when it is translated literally to English it loses the form.

Also, nice work Deist. I'm not done watching yet but, you seem to be on a good track.

Well, it makes perfect sense if you honestly believe that the stars are simply white dots that are attached to a great dome that sits atop the earth as opposed to the modern view of things. You know, once we discovered that the earth was spherical, the sky isn't a giant dome over the land containing the heavens, and the earth orbits the sun and the motion of the stars and planets is due to their own movements and not a great dome over the earth that is moving.

The bible espouses a great number of crazy things in it.

I should also note that back then, a 24 hour day was the only day that was defined. It was well before we figured out that a day only happened because of our planet's rotation on its axis like similar rotations of other celestial bodies.
If today you can take a thing like evolution and make it a crime to teach in the public schools, tomorrow you can make it a crime to teach it in the private schools and next year you can make it a crime to teach it to the hustings or in the church. At the next session you may ban books and the newspapers...
Ignorance and fanaticism are ever busy and need feeding. Always feeding and gloating for more. Today it is the public school teachers; tomorrow the private. The next day the preachers and the lecturers, the magazines, the books, the newspapers. After a while, Your Honor, it is the setting of man against man and creed against creed until with flying banners and beating drums we are marching backward to the glorious ages of the sixteenth centry when bigots lighted fagots to burn the men who dared to bring any intelligence and enlightenment and culture to the human mind. ~Clarence Darrow, at the Scopes Monkey Trial, 1925
