Couple points from a photog's perspective (for everyone, not picking on anyone) -

- Always hold your phone face level or slightly above so you don't get double chin effect (unless you're going for something specific).

- Stand somewhere where good light can fall onto your face so that you avoid "noise" (the fuzziness/graininess). It doesn't have to be strong sunlight - actually, diffuse light is generally best - but it does need to be bright enough to be sharp and clear on your phone.

- Figure out where your selfie lens is and always look at it, not your phone screen (again, unless you're going for a specific effect).

Same goes for web cams too.

Side notes:

Some phone cams 'distort' as they focus - it's always best to hold the phone in position for a few seconds to see what it does, then move it minutely to let it adjust. The difference in how 'fat' your face looks as it changes focal lengths can be extremely wide.

Eye contact with the lens is the biggest key to a good picture.

Posture is huge - avoid scrunching up, which causes weird folds and lumps that aren't indicative of your actual shape or weight.

Remember, when you're in motion in front of someone, they see you in 3D - you're compressing your 3D self into a 2D image and you have to 'trick' the camera a bit to get the effect you want.

Never knew the part I bolded and other suggestions also look helpful.  I will try it.  I just learned that the iPhone will focus specifically where you tell it to just by touching that part on your view screen.  Have you tried that?  In fact, I was just told this and haven't yet tried it.  Going out now for a walk with the dogs so I'll try to practice that and incorporate your suggestions too.

On my phone, I configured the volume keys to act as shutter button, so I can use the main camera, instead of the selfie, fixed-focus, crap one.

Yes, although generally the phone will focus on what I want just by minute changes in position.

That said, I have an S7 so it might work a bit differently from the iPhone.

Well, I took a walk and used the pointing trick to get this in focus (though it might well have done so anyway).

This is Smokey at 13 months.  From our walk this morning.

I've also been experimenting with looking into the camera directly .. and leaving my glasses off.  I'll post one of these soon.

Here you go, angled from above and looking into the camera (finally found it). Harsh light but it does ditch my extremely long forehead.

Had a stray dog around the house today (he's still here). We took a photo so the local vets could see if the could track his owners down. He's had recent surgery too (stiches on right fore and rear legs and on his shoulder and neck). He's a lovely little fellow too:
