I've already attempted it once but never again.

Giving up on what sense? If it has no cure you just need to accept it.

One day back in '07 I stopped breathing. Total respiratory arrest. I got in my truck and drove five blocks to the nearest hospital. They did a tracheotomy on my while I was awake and lying on the ER waiting room floor.

I could have given up and suffocated right there at home, but I don't do that.

Not giving up is good too.
Everyone should have the choice of being able to give up or not give up.
I'd like to think I could give up if things got too bad, but knowing me I'd probably want to squeeze out every last drop, like the way I always lick the gravy from my plate no matter how full I am.
The problem with laws against euthanasia is that people might want to live a little longer but may terminate a little early while they still can.

I wouldn't know. I would hope so though. The argument against it would be failed suicide in which you end up remaining alive but worse off. The whole idea of remaining alive just to be courageous or thought of as courageous sounds silly to me.

If I had a serious disease that affected my mental health and impaired my judgement, like short term memory loss or something, then I wouldn't be afraid, but would I be aware enough to even think about it?

Other than that I wouldn't even want to. I'd rather spend as long as I can on this earth, even if it means a painful last few months. As long as I am still aware of my surroundings and what's happening. I don't want to live as a confused old lady, who doesn't remember yesterday.

You stock up on pain relief patches and invite all your family and friends over for a goodbye party.
Upon arrival each person puts a patch on you, thereby making no one person responsible for your death.
After everyone leaves you go to bed and never wake up.

Nope, not gonna put that guilt trip on the people around me.

Drugs sounds painful. And the helium method is risky, or so I heard. If you do it incorrectly there is a chance your lungs will implode.

Nope, not going to do that for my family's sake.

I'm sure I would be able to find a nice painless way to kill myself (replacing oxygen with nitrogen seems a good way, no carbon dioxide build up to trigger the suffocating feeling, just slip into sleep then die) my worry would be finding a way that wouldn't void my insurance policy and deny my wife the money she would need.

As I've noted before, I don't second guess my friends and acquaintances that committed suicide during the AIDS era. I'm not going to start second guessing the motivations for the ones that did not, either.
The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.

Amen brother.

I’ve seen my brother and my dad go through terminal illnesses (the former a rare degenerative brain condition and the latter cancer) and all I can say is hell no.

I’ll be first on the plane to Switzerland if that diagnosis was made.
