If you write "hard scifi" then your devices, etc., should be scientifically rational.

Larry Niven does a fine job. "Ringworld is unstable!" So he wrote a whole book about how to keep it stable. 

The hard scifi doesn't use magic to deal with problems. That's the best definition I've heard. Keep it internally consistent and allow the reader to fill in gaps, perhaps with some gentle guidance. 

And keep Dr. Sumgai on the staff.
