Delusion?
#21
RE: Delusion?
Theists are fooled by illusion, hopelessly deluded, and a significant portion of them are crazy as hell.
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell

Not a dig at you and Frods btw.
Thanks 5th

I don't believe that I'll see my loved ones at the pearly gates. Death parts us I believe.

I think atheists delude themselves when they obstinately ignore facts. Same with theists. I think we can all have sympathies with the desire to support your own position, even though it may be intellectually bankrupt.

Time for some cheese (this thread needs some music):-

Wait. What is your belief in beyond your death [or an afterlife]? I'll spare some of mine- I don't have belief in ghost, soul and an afterlife of any sort. Although that I don't know your beliefs of afterlife.

My sincerely sympathies for your loss, 5thHorseman.

Fr0d0.
Atheists/Theists obstinately delude themselves of what "facts"? I'd more than happy to learn of this "facts". So I'll research if there is scientifically explainable for phenomenon of souls or ghosts or an afterlife.

[Yeah, I'm doubtful of the bibles' promises of an afterlife. Aside the bible, I'm not sure that we have enough resources to explain the phenomenon of soul/ghosts/an afterlife, in scientific manner. but I am doubtful if we can find anything that may linked to the existence of souls/ghosts/an afterlife.]

Ditto on Blams question. Is there some fact that one has to delude themselves of to be an atheist? I'd sure as hell like to hear what it is.

Why would you believe death parts us by the way? Don't you remember a little narrative about Abraham and the afterlife? I thought the jews "got it right"?

RE: Delusion?
I don't think there is anything wrong with theistic beliefs. I do think there is something wrong with using such beliefs to justify controlling the actions of others or hurting others in what (for them) is a temporary plane of existence.

And that's because I don't care what anyone else believes: I believe deliberately hurting others and controlling them is wrong (and I don't give a shit whether it's punished or not: it's still wrong).

Sure, nothing at all wrong with theistic beliefs. When you assert theistic "facts", well, it's time to reassess your value to the group..lol. You've clearly become a liability at that point.

RE: Delusion?
I voted delusional, because after the fight I had today with my children's Crazetian father.. it's reaffirmed my conclusion that they are delusional (among other things).

RE: Delusion?
I didn't vote for the simple reason that I think the options are too simplistic. From my point of view, the subject is much more layered than the basic 'liar, lunatic or lord'-style categories in the poll. Theistic beliefs can be all of those, as well as things such as wishful thinking, a security blanket against the nastier side of life, and even a form of escapism from reality. Throw in the sense of belonging that comes from being part of a like-minded group, the ease with which such groups can be manipulated by those with vested interests, and the bottom feeder televangelists and similar parasites, and you have a picture that is far, far muddier than this poll would suggest.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'
