The Newly Departed thread: announcements (departures)
RE: The Newly Departed thread: announcements
Dropping the child off at college, such a quintessentially American moment! Smile
Have fun!
The fool hath said in his heart, There is a God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

Don't parents of other nations do it?  Or do you just put them on a train?  Or what?

It's a rite of passage for the parent as much as the child.

Would you care to elaborate on that?  You are not, I presume, suggesting that Europeans do not attend college.

Somehow I am thinking that his has to do with geography rather than inherent values.  In the U.S., a person may attend a college and be very, very far from home, without leaving the country.

Parents didn't go, just saw me off from home. Obligatory call once settled. Enjoy the adventure!

Indeed she's going to be roughly 2000 miles from home.  And although she could fly within 50 miles or so, there's no public transport from there.

No public transportation at the Wisconsin end or the Oregon end?

Wisconsin.  And I do mean between the airport and the college rather than generally.  For all I know Wisconsin is a public transport dream.  If she flew into O'hare, the college would pick her up, but we'd have to ship everything but three bags. Her roommate's arriving that way. But she's relying on us to get the dorm mini-fridge and other necessities.

Ok. I was asking in case you were talking about her coming home to visit. I can give pretty good instructions on how to get from PDX to Market and Hawthorne via public transportation. I did it from Market and Hawthorne to the Lloyd Center (same light-rail train runs all the way to the airport) and back every weekday for over a year. 4-1/2 hours added to my work day, but only about $50/month vs. gas+parking.

Do good work and come back renewed. We'll miss you, Steambum.
