I will let you in on a little secret because you have proven a point of mine. I already knew before you even posted that about atheists. I knew the larger majority knows what the Bible says, how Christians believe, and how people use religion to control each other. They choose to dismiss it entirely.
Here is another secret. I have more reasons to walk away from it then I do to keep it because of the actions of people. Please do not mistake the fact that I know why people walk away from it. It is the ignorance, actions, and words that other people who claim to be Christians do to other people. Therefore you have people who walk away from it. Also, the loss of a child and what even pastors say such as "Well, God must have needed a little angel in heaven more than you needed him/her here." That is the last thing that a parent wants to hear about their dead child. Religion in general is an excuse to control people. That is what is going on in the Middle East and will always go on in the Middle East until something happens that ends the universe. Mormons is another religion who claim to be Christians, but turn around and have a whole different idea about what they say they believe. They use Mormonism to control people. Some pastors commit spiritual abuse to control others regardless of denomination.
I grew up in church. All it did for me was cause me heartache and grief really. Children who I went to school and church with laughed and teased me. I trusted some adults there that I should not have and told them what was going on in my childhood which is what no child should endure. Nothing was done except me being a bold-face liar. These were the so-called self-righteous Christians. Two of them are pastors now which in my opinion should not be. One is at least a counselor which she should not be either considering she acted like I was a bold-face liar. If she can't handle the things I have endured, that is the last field on earth she should ever be in. So believe it or not, I understand why people walk away. I understand their line of thinking, "Boy, if this is their God, why would I want to serve and worship Him for?" Here is another thing. I did walk away from church after I turned 18 and moved out of my mother's house. I was never forced to go to church. I chose to go to church. My grandparents took me to church. My mother only went maybe for a few years. I didn't fit in with my peers, my blood family, church, and now even on this site. One thing is for sure that out of all this, I really could care less how I am looked at by anyone or group. I am a survivor and nothing can hurt me regardless of any curse or demon or force anyone wants to bring against me.
I chose to make this post public so everyone on here can see that I have really been through the crap, too. That I have more reasons to walk away then to stay. After this being said publicly for anyone to read, why get mad at God for actions of imperfect human beings is now my next question. Human beings are screwed up from the word go. Your wrong my friend. My grandfather became pastor of our church when I was growing up because they could not afford a pastor. I used to work his sound every Sunday. And while there were some old prissy people, everyone treated me quite well. I left because I could no longer believe in the god described by the bible and call him morally just.

YOU have been tempted to leave for emotional reasons.
Now, I don't speak for everyone on here, but I abandoned religion at an early age for logical reasons. Why believe in nonsense? Why believe in an invisible man in the sky whom his believers cannot prove exists? The Bible is factually wrong, so why believe in that? Talking snakes and boats with two of every animal? That's not even freaking reasonable.
A common misconception of atheists is that, according to Christians, we've had bad experiences with religion or in our lives that "turn us away from God." For the majority of us, though, that's not the case. I had a good childhood. I used to love going to church as a child. But there came a point where I decided to work out my critical thinking muscles, did some research, and realized, "hey, this is all a load of horseshit."
Bad memories got nothing to do with it.

You misunderstood my whole entire post. I never said anything about you personally here. This was about me and reasons I could walk away if I were to choose to do so. I was speaking in general that I understand where some atheists come from or why they left in general. This was not about anyone in particular on this site. I am glad those people treated you well. I never said that you were mistreated. Re-read the post with an open mind and understand what I am saying here.

There's been about two thousand deities throughout human history, and the Christian God has no more proof behind him than any of the others. Chances are overwhelmingly likely that if I am wrong, so are you. Think of all those other gods who you deny the existence of. Think of all the possible hells you can burn in.

Bad memories got nothing to do with it. I did for a good while. People have different reasons for leaving. Mine, like you said, is emotional reasons. Others are reasons like yours. Someone's reasons could be completely different then mine your yours. The point is that I may not understand all of the reasons why people stop, but I am not totally ignorant about the whole thing either.

You're actually highlighting an interesting point about belief there, blondie.
Theists commonly argue that belief is a choice and that atheists simply choose not to believe in Gaud because they've had negative experiences and/or they just want to sin.
Your story, on the other hand, suggests that all the negative experience in the world won't necessarily cause a person to "choose" to abandon their faith. Because of the way you perceive and understand evidence, you continue to believe in Gaud because you think that's how the evidence lines up. Even though you at times have had many reasons to want to be able to stop believing, you can't because you don't actually have a choice in the matter.
Neither do we. When we are asked to consider Gaud, we're looking at something that simply looks ridiculous and impossible, especially in the case of the Christian one. It has paradoxical qualities, it's "inerrant word" is full of errors, there is no empirical evidence of its existence, and there is a large heap of evidence to suggest that it is a fictional character and an amalgam of other man-made gods that predate it. By our standard of evidence, there is simply no reason to believe that Gaud exists in any form man has named.
