I know, right? Things change in several centuries. Imagine that.
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

That depends on the facts which concern your religion.
If you believe that the bible is the perfect answer from a perfect god for all of life's questions, then Christians would have to admit that if this was your god, there's something he didn't tell you about. I am quite aware that Catholics don't even read the bible, leaving it's wisdom entirely in the hands of their clergy to hand out to them selectively, but then from where else do they derive their authority? If they don't have a perfect, and presentable source for their authority, then who the hell are they really?
The Vatican has, until very recently in its history held that life apart from the earth is not possible. It simply could not be when the sun and stars revolve around the earth! Doesn't really seem to me like their information resources have been all too infallible.
Therefore, the discovery of ETs, be they microbes or little green men, would not leave your clergy with some explaining to do - it would leave them with more explaining to do.

Not that it should matter, since we are in the present and therefore talking in the present, but... source please.

Yes, the inerrant word of god will yet again need to be "reinterpreted", passages that were once taken literally by even the Pope will become allegorical at best, and just ignored at worse. Religion will evolve, because it is man made and evolves with the societies it exists in. That is what always happens, eventually.

Are you suggesting that the book has changed? Doesn't it mean what it says in there?
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'

I would hardly call 1822 "very recent history."
More recently than that, slavery was legal in the United States. Yet no one busts that out to somehow try to suggest that America, as it stands today, endorses slavery.

I've been on these boards for several months now. You know my answer to these questions.

I am an ex-Catholic. I was sacramentally baptized and confirmed; my wife and I were sacramentally married, in a Basilica; we have five children, all baptized. As a practicing Catholic, I went to Confession regularly. I have been forced to, over the years, to come to the conclusion (initially, a somewhat sad one), that Catholicism, in particular, and Christianity, in general, are man-made religions devoid of any supernatural revelation whatsoever. And, yes, the Church did, once upon a time, believe in a "sky dome":
Quote:208 Can. 6. If anyone says that the sky, and the sun, and the moon and the stars, and the waters above the heavens are certain living and material * powers, let him be anathema.
Quote:1818 3. If anyone shall have said that it is possible that to the dogmas declared by the Church a meaning must sometimes be attributed according to the progress of science, different from that which the Church has understood and understands: let him be anathema [cf. n.1800]. I know it did. But it hasn't for quite a while. I'm talking in the present.
