How to be a vegetarian? (And also, why to be one?)
#71
RE: How to be a vegetarian? (And also, why to be one?)
I'm not offended by meat eaters. My daughter gets meat from us every day to make sure she gets everything she needs. When she gets older she will be allowed to eat whatever she wants, I'll just stop cooking meat for her as soon as I can get away with it because I find it gross. But if she wants to hit the kitchen, by my guest Smile
The fool hath said in his heart, There is a God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

And I didn't mean you(actually I knew exactly what you would respond, am I a psychic?) but I like making blanket statements in response to blanket statements Smile

Oh my post was a confused reply to both you and C_L. I meant her. I'm not legally awake yet.

That's great to hear you have tried being vegetarian Smile I've been vegan for a long time, and I just couldn't be anything else. My feelings are so strong that no amount of tastiness would tempt me for a second. When people say "but bacon is delicious" that sounds to me like "but slaves are so convenient". At least it's being honest, instead of making up rationalizations.

I hope it goes well! There are plenty of amazing recipes out there, although I'm rather useless in that department. I eat loads of "fake" meat, I'm not sure what they have in America but we have amazing companies like Vbites which do a substitute for just about anything, including cheese. I went to "veg fest" last year, a vegan festival, and fuck me there was a lot of amazing stuff there. The goods are all available, it's just a matter of finding them and finding the kinds you like. Of course not every substitute is going to be to everyone's taste.

I'm vegan for moral reasons, and for me it's so strong that I physically can't eat meat. My wife got us a fish substitute, and it was so convincing that it was virtually indistinguishable. This is fantastic, however I couldn't eat it! It actually freaked me out. But for anyone who misses meat, this kind of thing is perfect. There is also a whole new "fake meat" technology in the works which is going to synthesise the blood that gives meat its taste from plants, for the most realistic substitute yet.

@Aurora I can tell you that I am vegetarian because it suites me better and I feel better. I didn't decide one day just to become vegetarian but I was rather drawn into it, because if I didn't I would probably be a diabetic. For instance I remember once in high school after gym class I had a sugar attack, I went blind for few hours, could not form sentences and slipped into a short coma because nobody warned me how dangerous our everyday food can be.
You can google Penn Jillette who last year also became vegetarian (although he sometimes eats junk food) because he has quite interesting things to say like how changing his diet doesn't make him crave for bacon because your taste re-trains. For instance I could never eat pizza again because it would just taste like fat and salt. I remember when I used to eat it I would feel so thirsty for hours and not to mention tired.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

That's very true, about taste retraining. I now love all my replacement foods, including soya/oat/rice milk. It's just how my food tastes. All these replacements have got hugely better recently, in case anyone tried them a while back and thought they were horrible. Some of them indeed were very nasty. But now there is a wide range and you'd have to be a really fussy, stubborn bastard not to find something you like.

Of course, some people decide beforehand that anything that isn't meat will be disgusting (I've met quite a few).

Seems odd. I was on a low carb high fat diet for most of high school and after 3 years without pizza the first time I had it it tasted like fucking heaven. Maybe it only works when you cut out fats.

Pen "I throw a bacon and donut party at TAM" fucking Jillette has become a vegetarian?! It can now only be a matter of time until hell freezes over.
