Why More Americans Want to Own Guns
RE: Why More Americans Want to Own Guns
The vast majority of guns are toys, nothing more.

America has an enormous problem with gun crime. There are some here who say that banning guns is not the answer. So what is?

You can fix ignorance, you can't fix stupid.

Tinkety Tonk and down with the Nazis.

Not germane to my point.

My statement was about want vs. need.

I don't really worry about women with 50 pairs of shoes.

Gun Nuts with an arsenal are very worrisome.

Which has been my point from the start.

They won't tell you because they know there's no good way to control gun abuse when there are so many guns out there. They live on the slippery slope, ANY gun control program will lead INEVITABLY to total gun bans.

Yeah, I think that's neurotic too.

Once a year there needs to be a day that all laws are suspended for 24 hours.

Your purchase was clearly handled in an illegal manner. Did you report it? Will you be doing so?

I was corrected on this recently, Thump.  It so happens that the possession of a firearms permit in some states (permit to purchase) obviates the point-of-sale NICS check.

A NICS check is performed for issuance and renewal of the license.

I didn't know that, thanks for the correction, Chas.

I personally think that the answer is a combination of smart guns and a more-thorough regimen of background checks, including regular mental-health checks.

If you own the means to deal death, you owe it to society to demonstrate your mental soundness.

Mental soundness is of little value in predicting who will go on to abuse or misuse firearms. You might as well regulate them based on hair color for all the relation it has to what you would want to prevent.
