He definitely does it on purpose, it's the only part of him that isn't completely ignorant: He is slightly less obtuse than he pretends to be when repeatedly feigning to misunderstand people just to annoy them to get a reaction and negative attention when he's failing to get positive.

It's my observation that if you don't get all weepy and kiss ass when someone tells a sob story the mob goes bat shit crazy and start throwing personal attacks  like sand in a wind storm.  Some people can't tolerate opinions that are even slightly different from theirs.
