In some ways. I don't think we've explored all the ways it can be done yet - not as efficiently as they claim it to be. For one, a lot of them espouse organic ideas that AREN'T efficient for both producing enough food AND protecting the environment. That's my point - if you take people off meat, you have to produce SO much more plant material, and to do it quickly and store it and distribute it (because some things can only be grown in some areas, unless you're working in hydroponics or greenhouses, which use their own energy) you have to use...more energy.
For another, a lot of vegetarianism IS based on the love for animals more than humans. I find the "serious" people in PETA to be laughable, and for vegans who do it to "save" the animals to be ludicrous.
I know one vegan who doesn't spout bullshit. She turned vegan because of her diabetes and it completely changed her life around. She supports it whole-heartedly for what it can do in various health cases. I don't mind that, but she also doesn't try to "convert" people.

The fact is, we have evolved as omnivores and we require meat as well as vegetables.
They seem to have this idea that in nature animals live in some sort of happy co-existance where no really gets hurt.
One suspects they've watched "Bambi" one too many times.

To be fair the argument that "Eating all out air scrubbing plants is worse" is complete crap, if we turned our dairy and meat farms into forestry and grain we'd pretty much be sorted.

The people at PETA are a bunch of assholes. I lost all respect for Bob Barker when I read about him giving $2 million to this organization of douchebags.

It's propaganda, it's like showing a "guns are evil" ad where the footage is all trench warfare from the early 1900s and then saying we should ban all gun.
