Pet stores have special medicated pads/gauze for purchase (we use them, you can also find them on line). Don't use anything smaller than the end of your finger to clean with.

If we need to clean farther down in the ear we get a solution from the vet that is squirted into the ear canal, then the base of the ears are rubbed.

You can find home made recipes for cleaning solutions on line.

Our biggest problem is getting them to hold still for the cleaning.

Could you like maybe use the regular old ear buds to clean them?

My boxer ended up getting cauliflower ear so I had to clean it a lot. We used medicated products and pet store ones but we used a paper towel. We put the stuff on the paper towel, leaned his head over, moved the ear back and wiped the ear out. He was really calm so it worked well for us. I would be hesitant to put anything long in the ear of any dog though but that is because I know the pain of even a qtip going in too far.

The solutions you get at the pet store are good. And not expensive.

But a solution of warm water and hydrogen peroxide works just as well. If your pup is excitable, it probably won't work. Tanner either likes it or doesn't care.

Haha my husky LOVES it. He makes this weird almost growling... purring?... noise. I thought he was making the noise because he didn't like it but if you take your hand away he grunts and pushes his ear back against your hand till you do it again.

We use this stuff.

A few drops in each ear once a week or so and then you massage their ears.  They love it.  They think they're getting petted and don't even know they are being treated.
