Different communities have more or less competent police forces, and more or less dickish ones. When I lived in one of the largest cities in the US, assholes. I live out in the middle of nowhere now, they're downright pleasant. I think it might have something to do with us not sending our tiny cohort of officers into a neverending stream of compromising scenarios where the margin of error is slim to nil....armed with every tool they need to fuck it up but few to effect a positive outcome.

Hey, all of this stuff has been true, so it must always be true. I'm sure people who have been raped by on-duty cops were just criminals. Oh, had your property stolen by a cop? You had to have been breaking the law. Not convicted? They went easy on you.

The sherriffs out here are cool.
Oxnard PD, on the other hand ... buncha badge-heavy motherfuckers.

Hit or miss with sheriffs round here. They're either totally cool or complete mouthbreathers. I went hunting with a deputy back in october (he wouldn't stop bitching about his coworkers), he had elk tags and I have bobcats tags...we didn't get shit. Good camping trip, saw alot of wildlife, passed on a few shots we would have taken if we knew we weren;t going to see anything better. When the trout start to run we're gonna hit this little upcounty creek and fill a stockpot or two - he says he;s got the line, nobody else fishes it. I had him cracking up for three solid days telling him stories about learning how to poach in s. florida.
He says "Hey man, what's softshell cooter tast like anyway?"
-"bit like bald eagle"

I got in a decent amount of trouble when I was a youngster, at the same time they were decent people. Some cared, some didn't, the one's who cared made a bigger impact if you ask me.

Where I live most don't bother you if your white, if your not you can expect to be profiled. I've seen police offers in my store before giving two African American teenagers harsh looks and they were just doing normal things teen their age do. So, it's mostly mixed results. If your Hispanic, and your speaking Spanish they will hassle you even more then if your African American.

I ran into some of that in Puerto Rico, mostly small town cops. I rattled at them in my poor Italian and confused the hell out of them.,

The interactions I've had or witnessed, left me with a negative impression more often than not.
I consider it best to just avoid them when humanly possible.
I don't chat them up, and would only ask one for help under the most dire of circumstances.
