PS What ARE those lyrics!?
It's the incredible "Cold genius" song by Purcell
Quote:What Power art thou who from below
Hast made me rise unwillingly and slow
From beds of everlasting snow?
See'st thou not how stiff and wondrous old,
Far unfit to bear the bitter cold,
I can scarcely move or draw my breath?
Let me, let me freeze again to death

As much as I worship Bach, his stuff can sometimes appear a bit on the technical overwhelming side even when he has emotional depth. But the Lute suites are simply so intimate, pure magic. The only thing that comes close to me in that respect are the Cello suites, but even they already are a bit more showy and dramatic

Corigliano came to my university around 1999 (I think) to talk about AIDS, the AIDS quilt and its effect on him and this piece, and we played through a few sections. I'm mainly sharing this because it's actually a really cool piece of music, and most people don't know about him.
Also, because he's not mega-famous, you can find lots of master classes and interviews that he has done, and really get some insight into what the life of a modern art composer is really like. Interesting (to me, at least).
PS Two bass drums. Not one. TWO. He turned it up to 11 for this song, but you really have to hear it live to know how terrifying two bass drums in a little concert hall can be.

Received the brochure for the 2017-18 Phoenix Symphony season. As expected they fuck up every single concert with some piece of 20th or 21st century trash. Looks like I get to save a lot of money by staying home.

Suck it up, maybe you'll be pleasantly surprised. And if not, you can complain here, I'll be interested

This is just awesome, an apparently pretty famous Händel piece which so far has escaped my attention. The solo parts from the choir aren't perfect, but it's a very engaging performance.

No, that would just reward them for shitty programming. When they call to find out why we haven't re-upped I hope I am here to take the call.

I listened to this in just the right state, and I got a bit of a drug buzz from the whirling lines. Nice!

Apart from the stunning beginning, the penultimate part "de torrente in via bibet" is especially remarkable
