I noticed something weird when I posted a GIF the other day, but now it's happened again, so I decided to try to make sense of it...
I see it happening on Android's Dolphin, and Windows' Firefox and Chrome, so I guess it's a server side issue.

But what gets posted is a static image.... which, when I check the url, turns out to be https://images.weserv.nl/?url=i.imgur.com%2FjLZz4Na.gif

What is this weserv.nl that's getting attached and busting the image?
Does it have something to do with the https imposition, to prevent us from having insecure items in the middle of the page?
If it is, then something's not working as intended with animated GIFs.

I'm using an http link that gets converted to that redirect...
But when you click on my link, it converts to https and the https version works well.

The link is right, they both work well out of this forum:

The server where it's hosted doesn't seem to have https up and running. You can upload it to imgur and use the https link.
It's not ideal... it's a workaround.

Oh, it might have something to do with the site's switch over to https then. Weird.

Hmm, so browsers do not like it when an HTTPS site uses "mixed content", i.e. an HTTPS page contains resources (e.g. images) over HTTP.

To avoid this problem I installed a plugin which sends all HTTP images via an image proxy service, which works over HTTPS. However it seems the service doesn't handle gifs very well. I'll look into alternatives, however in the mean time I would suggest using https://imgur.com to host images.
