The insult comes from your incorrect assumption about what atheism is, the hubris to attribute your assumption to what we believe, and your arrogance in assuming we haven't rationally considered your argument before. It's as if one of us came to a christian forum, posted a nonsense version of christian belief, and expected you to take it seriously. I suspect there would be offense taken to that. If you seriously want to have an honest, rational debate, then start with a premise that isn't a strawman argument. RE: A Quote For Atheist to consider :

Well you'll have my bible toting brother beat if you can concede that evolution too, along with the big bang, could also be part of god's grand plan. You are absolutely right that nothing science tells us is directly in opposition with religion. It is only when the bible is taken as literal and authorative that science makes religion seem .. dumb. If christians would just have faith that science only has the power to reveal the beauty of god's grand design, they could at least join the modern era albeit with their after-life security blankets.
Speaking of after-life, would it really be such a bad deal to 'just' live for 70 to 90 years -quite long by mammilian standards- and then go into the compost bin? Would you really rather never have lived at all? Try being grateful for that much and you might just have a happy life. I know what my brother would say though, "why should you give up your place at god's feet surrounded by eternal harp music and those like you who are blessed". Perhaps because that is all delusion and blinds you to the miraculous though fleeting life you actually have. Why do christians so devalue this life any way? Oh, Lee Strobel, so what? You are making the same proof this guy is?

Why don't you highlight the points in it that you like, and we'll refute them.
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell
