Atheist groups needing to prove themselves

Atheist groups needing to prove themselves
From being involved in some groups in my area, it seems they feel the need to prove to the community that they are moral people by doing good works. Some have even gone as far as to put in the description of the event that they are doing it to show that "atheists care". This has kind of turned me off to the group because it seems like they doing it out of a reaction to Christians rather than out of a desire to help the community.

Given the fact that Atheists often face criticisms, perhaps the group thinks they are justified in making that claim. We don't always bbq babies.

Or they're doing it because they want to help people, and also want to raise awareness that atheists can help people as well as any religious group. It's possible to work towards more than one goal at a time.

. . . but when we do . . .

It just seems to dignify the criticisms too much when you feel the need to advertise that you're "good without God" like some do.

How is directly countering and providing evidence against a criticism 'dignifying' it? That criticism is an entrenched part of much of American culture..it should be challenged.

I'll just be my own atheist group of one.

It's dignifying it in a way that you're making it a slogan and you feel the need to advertise that it's an important reason why you are doing what you're doing. You can challenge it directly with arguments without having to make it part of your identity.

And striving to dispel that stigma is a good thing...plus they're also helping people in need.

I'm not seeing a negative here.  Plus, you don't have to be associated with any group you don't like.

That's true and I'm not associated with them anymore.
