What are you a fangirl/fanboy of?

What are you a fangirl/fanboy of?
I know a few members fanisms, but it seems like something people don’t talk much about.

I’d like people to share their media loves. Movies, music, TV, books, anything really. It would also be nice if we can refrain from dissing other people’s loves, in this thread at least. Like, not a fan? That’s fine, share why even, if you like, but let’s make this a fun thread to share more positives with each other than negatives. That’s my hope anyway.

I’m a person who gets a lot of joy from my entertainment, and who tries to focus on the good things as much as I can. There are quite a lot of things I’m a big fan of. Harry Potter, Star Wars, Star Trek, Disney and Pixar cartoons, Game of Thrones/ASoIaF, The Princess Bride, Doctor Horrible, X-men, most of the Dc Universe, LoTR, Wherl of Time, Broadway musicals, and more.

I’m hoping this will become a positive place to share. Smile

So I’ll start by detailing one. Star Wars.
I’m 40 something, so I was a kid when the OT hit theaters. I recall my brother getting the Millennium Falcon model, a set up of Jabbas Palace, and a toy light saber. There were never female Jedi, even in the prequels they were a footnote, and as a kid I was always Princess Leia with a blaster. Which is fine, she’s awesome and it was a huge step up at the time. So I liked Staw Wars, I even enjoyed the prequels in my 20s, barring some lame parts, they were enjoyable and had a great finale. But Palme, man. What a lame duck character.

Anyway, so I liked them well enough but considered myself more of a Trekkie, screw people who don’t like that term. Until recently.

It’s hard to express what TFA did to me. When Rey force pulled the light saber out of the snow and lit it up, I cried. Like a little girl. I’m unashamed! It opened Star Wars to me in ways that had previously seemed closed. Plus Emo Kylo Ren rocks. I didn’t love him at first but the performance grew on me. I know many hate him, and that’s fine, I even understand a bit. But I know there is more to these characters that we will soon get to see.

Anyway, so I’ve laid one of my many fangirlisms bare. I hope others share theirs and if not, well, be gentle!

For me, I suppose it would have to be the X-Men.

The 1992 animated series as well as the movie franchise.

Probably certain gay pornstars, as well, but this isn't Area 69.

I'm a Star Wars and Star Trek geek, myself.

You're right about female Jedi, few and far between in the movies. In fact, women seemed to be in short supply in the original trilogy completely. It was only in recent years, with the advent of the animated shows, and now, TFA, that female Jedi are starting to be seen, and it was the animated Clone Wars series that gave me my favourite female Jedi: Ahsoka.

Trek: I used to be a huge Trek geeks, but I lost interest in the universe when they decided to start doing retro-Trek: first with Enterprise, then with the Jar Jar Abrams films, and now with Discovery.

I'll probably see Discovery at some point but I'm in no rush and I absolutely refuse to pay for it.

Other things I'm a bit of a fan of:

Terry Pratchett's Discworld,
Judge Dredd,
Good Gothic horror, and good horror in general,
Some of the DC and Marvel TV shows/movies (not really into the comics).

I've really gotten into Rick and Morty this year. I know it's been out forever but my fiancé and I love it, so much so we're going dressed as them for Halloween (I'm evil rick, she's evil morty). Even got a portal gun and everything!

I've tried watching it a couple of times but can't get into it.

Think it's worth a fourth try?

Amanda Nunes! I’m one of those obnoxious fan girls that gets weak in the knees. Love of my life!

I’m a UFC fan girl, in general.

Denise Frohman. There’s not a poem of hers that I don’t absolutely love.

And well... I grew up in a cult, basically, and I wasn’t allowed to watch much tv or even listen to “secular music”. Growing up I had the tendency to become a fan of people around me if I found them super talented or smart. I had no famous people to be a fan of haha! When I left the church and religion, I guess it got worse lol! I was used to believing in a god who was amazing to me, and now I find the amazing in people. So, sometimes I become a fan girl of people I know lol! People would say it’s like a crush, but I think I’m a fan.

Totes not creepy.

Sherlock Holmes. -  the original stories, the pastiches, the films (barring those two abortions with RDJ), the plays, the TV shows- all of it. I once engaged in a long, detailed, tedious ('tedious' to anyone but a Holmesian, I mean) debate regarding the location(s) of Watson's wounds. I am a member in good standing of three different branches of the Baker Street Irregulars. I can discourse at great length about Holmes' relationships to the Vernet family, Nero Wolfe, and the Greystokes of England. I am able to construct a reasonably compelling argument that Irene Adler was a complete bitch who should have been whipped  round the town square. Depictions of Holmes with a deerstalker and/or a Meerschaum pipe drive me spare.

I think that qualifies me as a fanboy.

I enjoy Sherlock Holmes, though not as much as you, and my father is a also huge fan. So you like the TV show with Cumberbatch? I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I completely agree with you about the RDJ movies. My husband flips them on now and again, and I can't stand them. I tried to enjoy, but a few minutes in and I just want to do anything else. Clean the catbox. Wash my hair. They are that terrible.

Yes, I quite like the Cumberbatch version.

But my favourite of the more recent incarnations is 'Mr Holmes' with Ian McKellan. Very sweet, touching film about Holmes near the end of his life.

Oh, I haven’t seen that. He’s a marvelous actor, I adore him. I’ll check it out, ty!
