What are you a fangirl/fanboy of?

RE: What are you a fangirl/fanboy of?
I'm a Nintendo gamer, and a big fan of The Legend of Zelda and Pokemon. I also really love Undertale, a PC game.

Other things that caught my fancy over the years, and still do command my attention whenever they pop up:
  • The Beatles
  • Batman (had a pretty good comic collection in the early '70s, and still love to watch the Adam West/Burt Ward silliness)
  • Dragons in general -- I have paintings and prints and sculptures all over the house.
  • Monty Python
  • Ghostbusters
  • Max Headroom
  • The Tick (both animated and live-action; keep meaning to get some of the comics, too)
  • Danger Mouse
Things I used to like a lot, but not so much nowadays:
  • Star Trek:  TOS
  • Dr. Who (just not much of a TV watcher any more, but the new series production values are fantastic compared to the old series)
  • The Man From U.N.C.L.E.
  • Starcraft
  • Drag racing -- had a poster of Don Garlits up on my wall when I was a teenager
  • Silver Surfer
  • Genesis -- at least until Steve Hackett left. Sad
  • The Guess Who -- I had the most mind-bogglingly obscure albums in my collection, and still have 100+ songs filed away in my head.

I hear that the batman and robin characters wore padded bulges.  Just saying.

Well surprise! None of you knew this, I'm sure, but I'm into post-Industrial Music and Darkwave.
Especially Hocico. I've heard all of their original albums and some of their remix albums.
Futurepop too. I listen to dark electronic music almost every day.

I was really into fantasy and read a lot of D@D novels. I think dwarves are awesome! I've read most of the "Legend of Drizzt'd" books and some of the DragonLance books. Also I have the compilation of several books that has Elminster's origin and earlier days.

I used to be very much into Marvel Comics and at various times have had subscriptions to X-men, Wolverine, or their subscription based online service, Marvel Unlimited.

I have a shirt that has the logo from Captain America's shield on it, as well as a replica of the shirt that the students at the Xavier Institute wear. But it doesn't have a very flattering cut to it, so I don't wear it much.

RE: What are you a fangirl/fanboy of?
The biggest fandom for me, at least as a kid, was Transformers (Generation 1). The toys came out at exactly the right time for me, and the few times I could actually watch the cartoon (mid-80s in a rural area meant antenna, so we had maybe 3-4 channels that actually came in clearly at any one time) were religious experiences for me. As much as I hated going down to Children's Hospital in Boston for all my surgeries, Mom would usually buy me one for each surgery, and I could actually watch Transformers clearly there.

Star Wars and Star Trek have also always been huge parts of my life. Probably more SW than Trek (I used to read the novels, I watched The Clone Wars cartoon, am currently watching the Rebels cartoon, and play SWTOR off and on). When I was a kid, I thought Jedi were one of the coolest things imaginable, but as an adult I'm more into the non-Force characters trying to make their way in a universe that has space magic ninjas/samurai/wizards running around in it.

More recently, I got into the Mass Effect universe. I thought the original trilogy of games were mostly brilliant, with a few missteps. Andromeda was a mess, however, so I'm concerned about the future of that franchise.

I also really like the Deus Ex universe, but, again, am concerned about the future of the franchise since Mankind Divided didn't do so hot in the sales department.

For fantasy stuff, The Forgotten Realms. It started with one of the old gold box PC games - Curse of the Azure Bonds - and then I started reading the novels, and then my brothers and I actually played a campaign in that setting for a while.

I used to be into both The Wheel of Time and A Song of Fire and Ice, but basically gave up when the authors had huge delays between books. In The Wheel of Time's case, I gave up before Robert Jordan died because I got tired of reading 800+ page books where barely anything of note happened. I don't have HBO, so I can't watch Game of Thrones. *shrug*

With comics, it started with the Marvel Transformers comics (of course), and then migrated to X-Men during the early 90s Claremont/Lee run (just before the big Genosha crossover event). While I occasionally read other Marvel titles, the X-Men (and other X books) were my lens into that setting. While the X-Men is basically a metaphor for racism and/or non cis-gendered discrimination, as a physically disabled kid/guy, I felt like I could identify with the concept of being ostracized simply because one is born different.

Finally, with video games (excluding Mass Effect and Deus Ex, which I already mentioned), the Final Fantasy series was huge for me, but I've slowly fallen out of them (I thought XV was an utter trainwreck of a game). That said, I think X|V is incredibly solid. It probably has the best story of any of the games (which is crazy, because it's a MMO, but it's really well-written), and is very fun to play.

RE: What are you a fangirl/fanboy of?
I know I'm seen as a soccer nerd on here, and hey, it's all relative. But don't ask me who the goalkeepers were in last night's Atlanta United vs. Columbus Crew MLS playoff. I didn't even see it because life called (in the form of a nutrition class at my HMO <3 ). But I do enjoy watching when I have the legitimate time to do so (90 minutes, remember, plus OT and penalty kicks if it's a tourney.

I remember when I first moved into my condo in Pennsylvania. We had buku cable! So I did indeed spend the day watching what was then Fox Sports World. Leagues I had never watched. Bundesliga, Serie A, EPL, La Liga, and I think maybe Ligue 1. There was a world of the sport of there, and that day's matches were just the tip of the iceberg. But now I'm more diciplined. I watch MLS and CONCACAF Champions League (instead of the more fashionable UEFA CL), because I am an American. In America. UEFA is not our zone. CONCACAF is.

But nowadays, real life (family, health, etc.) take precedence, as they should have all along. But, honestly, I had a tendency as a kid to push it to the next level, but with auto racing. I idolized Dale Earnhardt Sr. from NASCAR. Bobby Rahal in Indy Car. And I enjoyed other forms of motorsport, like sports cars, and even showroom stock, when it would get any airtime. I'd get compulsive, and visibly upset if Dale placed as low as 5th any one day.

Music was sort of an obsession, but I had no interest in what my peers liked (true in every sphere of life, really). I liked what their parents liked. So, usually smooth jazz/new age (i.e. Kenny G, Enya, Yanni). My first concert, I think, was David Lanz. My mother, the hard rocker, took me. We also saw Keiko Matsui, Tim Weisberg, Dan Siegel, and some others I forget.

As for soccer, I also like the infrastructural issues: Columbus Crew moving to Austin, TX in '19, Sunil Gulati and the upcoming U.S. Soccer election, new stadia, new kit sponsors, etc.

Forgot about Bab 5.

Well, up til the movie "Legend of the Rangers".

That movies sucked more than a $2 hooker.

I never saw "Legend of the Rangers". The only movies I saw were, "The Gathering" and "In The Beginning". I liked those apart from the fact that the former made Kosh seem ridiculously vulnerable. That definitely didn't fit in with the rest of the series.

I'm impressed by your knowledge of $2 hookers. I wouldn't think a cardiologist (especially a female one) would have a lot of experience with those but I guess there were trying times in medical school.
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

I've tried watching it a couple of times but can't get into it.

Think it's worth a fourth try?

Yes! Definitely.

Oh... what a can of worms!!

First, in case you guys missed it, I'm a fan of my country. Tongue
Portugal!

In terms of tv...
I've followed quite a few shows.
I've seen all the Star Trek there is... except the not-really-canon fan-made continuation of the original series. I'm keeping Discovery up to date.... and I'm enjoying the Orville, as a funny tribute to TNG.

Enjoying Game of Thrones... read the books and can't wait for the next one.

Doctor Who... a silly sci-fi, but thoroughly enjoyable. After catching up with the "new" series, I'm going through the old series, even though many episodes only exist in audio+stills.

I also think for me Louis Theroux should go in there.

He's a British documentary maker, which is good for me because I hate the style of most American documentaries, that stupid over dramatic deep voice guy they have narrating most of time puts me off.

I think I've watched everything he's done and most of the time more than once.

Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.

Impersonation is treason.
