If you're willing to pay a bit more (not much), you could get a GTX 560. Or a HD 6850/6870.
Oh, and make sure your power supply is powerful enough. It's 500W so it should be, but check the amps and that it has enough power cables just to be sure. Sucks to buy a card and then notice that your PSU needs an upgrade too

500w is not enough for a Phenom, two modern video cards & everything else he has attached. Your PC will start getting flaky within a year if you go this route.

Hmmm.... Maybe a gpu, then a power supply later? It wouldn't hurt anything to get the gpu first, would it? or would a flaky power supply damage components?

The PSU won't damage the components unless you make the graphics card/CPU use more power. So unless you're overclocking them you won't need the extra power.
Get the GPU first. It's the most important for gaming.
