But I don't see them as arrogant pricks at all. I see exactly where they're coming from 99% of the time.

I admire the qualities of Vulcans: they are highly rational, peaceful, and are masters of their emotions. In particular, in part two of the Star Trek TNG episode "unification", I enjoyed it when Spock remarked to Data that many Vulcans struggle their whole lives to attain what Data has been given by design (namely Data's efficient intellect and superior strength and the fact that Data has no emotional impediments).

Might as well annoy all the wingnuts in one go.

When I first started visiting forums, it was a theology forum, and I chose the name apophenia -- the finding of patterns in random data -- as something of an inside joke poking fun at the Christian theists on that forum.  So I can definitely empathize.  In a similar way, choosing to advertise myself as "The Great Serpent" is both an allusion to the character in Norse mythology as well as a jab at the story of Satan as a serpent in the garden of Eden.

Ah, a fellow fan of savage irony. There is a subset of crank who will have a meltdown for such trivialities.

I'm a Lord of the Rings fan fiction writer. Gwaithmir is one of a few Sindarin translations of Karl.

Never understood the desire to write fan fiction. But, as long as you enjoy it and you're not trampling copyrights and you do it with the door locked and don't let anybody catch you at it and always wash your hands afterwards, I suppose there's nothing wrong with it.

A play on "The Third Chimpanzee" by Jared Diamond. I was going to call myself AsparagusP. I like that one a lot too!
