Yes, that is what I meant by third person perspective.

Depending on when you can realistically get a PS4 console, the PS5 is being released November 2020.

I am downloading Fornite right now on the console: about 25% completed. Yes, I will play with you when you get your console.

Well I'm only just learning about PlayStations now tbh but as I understand it a new 'slim' type of PS4 has been released recently... not that I care about that one way or the other but just that that happens to be the state of affairs as I'm looking into buying one... in 500gb and 1tb versions but at the same time a new PS4 'Pro' console all to do with '4K' is also being released. It's all new to me really... so I don't know what's best to get but I doubt I'd have any justification to get the pro version.

What I am curious about though is whether the judderiness I saw earlier was caused by the graphics capabilities of my laptop or by the Internet connection, because if it's the latter then getting a PS4 might not make any difference to the smoothness of the gameplay. So I basically need to find out how dependent that game is on a fast Internet connection; ie it took me about two hours to download and the fastest download speed I reached was 1.8MB/s, which is not great. So whether I stick with it... and/or get a playstation will depend a lot on that... but if I do then thanks, I'll look forward to playing with you Smile

Anyhoo, gotta go to bed now so goodnight Smile

I have high speed internet and even I experience lag in multiplayer mode on the PS4. Not so much on the laptop, though. *shrugs*

Have a good night. Smile Sleep well.

Looks like I won't be playing Fortnite. Only the pvp version is available. You have to pay to play pve. And I don't pvp.

Games are are made by the sinners for the sinners. It's a total waste of time when the kingdom of God is at hand. And it saddens my heart that even such strong believers as Alpha Male succumb to sin.

That's sad if that's the case Sad I know that you're right... that Battle Royale, the free one, is pvp and the paid ones are pve, but I don't know what that means in any technical sense, or why you'd object to pvp? Looking it up, the difference seems to be something like pve is cooperative play against the computer in quests etc? and pvp is against other players? Anyway, Battle Royale is basically you and/or a partner and/or a small team against other single/double/small team players, with a total of one hundred players, all narrowed down to last man/team standing. Anyway, from what I'm reading, it says that the pve 'Save The World' version of Fortnite is due to become free to play sometime this year (2018), so you could look forward to that, but as I said, I don't really know what the difference is between pvp and pve in any technical sense, and why you'd prefer one over the other?

That would be another option to aim for; higher speed internet... but thus far I haven't needed it cos it's been just about adequate for streaming etc. So I guess it depends how much I get into all of this, or whether this Fortnite is just a passing whim. What I'm going to do today is just play around with the settings in Fortnite and see if it's possible to reduce the lag by reducing the quality of the graphics or something like that... and my benchmark will basically be whether I can get the crosshairs to stabilise enough to actually be able to aim and take a shot. If I can get that, then I can maybe stick with playing it on my laptop after all (rather than getting a PS4 etc)... but I don't know for sure yet whether that's the only problem in the judderiness.

Yep, that's helped a lot by changing the settings to low quality; it immediately made it much more responsive both in and out of game, so I think I can play it on my laptop after all Smile It's still not perfect but it's much much smoother and more responsive than before.

I've just never liked PVP in MMO games.

The game stated that the PVE area was to be made free in 2018, but the year's almost done.

@emjay: Yeah, you can't really play this if your computer and/or connection aren't fast enough, since you're playing against real people.  If you get it working let us know. Also, try playing the soaring 50s mode. It's easier because half the people are on your side to start.

@kit: pvp is what it's all about and it's a blast. Jackie paid for the pve and never plays it.

I managed to get it working to a vaguely playable level by changing the quality settings to 'low'; that made the game responsive enough that I could do the basic tasks, like using the glider and aiming and building walls... but I still don't have much confidence in it because it's still not smooth/reliable enough that I'd ever be able to get good at it.

So I've decided that I definitely want to get a console to play this on... something that will have better graphics capabilities than my laptop... so I'm just in the process now of weighing them up and trying to decide which one... and should hopefully be buying it in the next few days.

Basically the choice is out of:
a) Xbox One X; expensive... about £450...but powerful.
b) Nintendo Switch; fair price of about £250, lower framerate for Fortnite of 30fps, possible unavailability of the Fortnite pve games (in case I did want to pay for them at some point in the future) but looks all round a more appealing console for me in terms of the sorts of games it has and the portable aspect it has. So I could imagine myself being happy with just Fortnite, Mario Kart and maybe some puzzle game for playing on the small screen.
c) PS4; same price as a Switch of about £250, higher framerate for Fortnite of 60fps, allows use of a keyboard/mouse if required (where Switch does not) so would be able to learn to play it the PC way if I wanted. More games available than the Switch I think and cheaper game prices. Just the sorts of game I associate with a PlayStation are more action-packed/fast paced than I usually go for; ie Fortnite is an exception to the usual sort of stuff I'd play since usually I'm more likely to play simple puzzle games etc... the sort of things I'd more associate with Nintendo.

So I'm pretty torn here, but mainly out of the Switch and PS4, because the Xbox is the one I know the least about and the one where all the benefits seem to be things I generally wouldn't care about... like '4K'; I don't even care about HD Wink So realistically and by gut it's out of the Switch and PS4 for me; the PS4 would be better for Fortnite I think (though both of them look fine in youtube videos), but the Switch I think would appeal to me more on an all round basis, albeit at the cost of much more expensive games. So it's a real tough one for me, but I am pretty certain it's time to get one or the other; it's been a long time since I've had a proper console and I'm very out of the loop. So thanks for sparking an interest for me here with Fortnite... and in the prospect of playing it with you Smile It really does look a good game and I'm already getting addicted to just watching people play it on YouTube.

As to the soaring 50s mode thing, I think that was my first game by default and one which I'm aware now that I likely ballsed up even more than I thought I did Blush You know I said that I was only able to shoot in the general direction of enemies while that lag was in effect?... well I think I was actually shooting at my teammates because they had names written above their characters... which I have since learnt is how they designate teammates duo/squad games. But that was my very first game and almost literally thrown in at the deep end. But thanks to all these youtube videos I'm understanding the game much more now.
