Yeah, I picked up on that. It's certainly not a show where they are going to do any deep dives into anything.

Never mind deep dives, most of the plot and characters don't stand scrutiny of mere cursory glance magnitude. Hilarious! The stupid!

Until the most recent episode, every episode of season 2 just made me sigh sadly. I love some good science fiction, but these stories have been too silly and shallow. If I recall, season 1 only had one or two decent episodes. But I sort of figured that maybe the show was just taking some time to find itself. I think that it is running out of time to figure itself out.

I love good sci fi too - think I'll re-read Surface Detail by Iain M Banks after watching this to purge myself

But moclans are not all male, they are just extremely sexist!

It said in the first episode they're all male, although in a subsequent episode a miracle birth of Maryesque dimensions occurs and a girl is born! First one ever we think, and later another one turns up.

Well, I got hold of the first season. I had reservations because it stars Seth McFarlane, who I think is as funny as cance.r

Began to eagerly watch it. After about 20 minutes, I thought. WTF is this crap? It's dreadful.

Then I did what I should have done; looked at reviews. Discovered it's allegedly a comedy drama. Not from where I was sitting. Seth didn't quite reach my low expectations of him. My idea of a comedy drama is LA Law.

I thought 'Mars Attacks' was hilarious, but my favourite Sci fi comedy is Galaxy Quest, even though I can't stand Tim Allen--a wicked, fully merited satire of Trekkies.

I guess humour is very much a matter of taste. Mine has changed a lot since I was 12.

I've watched the show competly up untill now.

I like it.

Is it Trek? No... But it has a certain 'Trekkishness' to it.

Is it 'Star Wars'? Again, definately not as it's afore mentioned 'Trekkishness' is more predominant.

Now.. is it 'Hard core science fiction'?

Definately not. Heck the 'Expanse' is more hard sci-fi than anything else to watch about at the moment and even they invoke 'Space magic' which no one I know seems to bat an eye-lid at.

The Orville is what it is.

I like it... Yup, some things about it make me smile. Some things make me cringe. Some times the tales make me rage in exasperation. So far, however, I've found the level of the show to be worth watching.

I think you missed some pretty salient points during the story line. They have girl births on a rare, but regular basis. They just turn all of the girls into boys.

Oh right, I see. Egg laying and fertilising "boys." From...er   girls? No no, never mind, I'm sure I'm just being thick and the species makes perfect sense and isn't just a Gillette ad esque vessel to "comically"  have a pop at toxic masculinity/masculinity/men. That's a relief - I was convinced the program was a hilariously ill conceived and executed farcical mess there for a minute. Phew.
