The Orville

RE: The Orville
Watching S01E11 and it transpires that John, the black male lead, is in fact a closeted genius who only "pretends" to be one of the pathetic idiot toxic men in order to have an easy life! Thankfully miss slippy knickers is there to give him the chance to realise his true awesomeness and get promoted, despite the ignorant come racist protestations of the stupid infantile white man captain! He realises the error of his ways eventually saying: "Miss slippy knickers was right about you. She's right about a lot of things." and finishes off the episode with his usual sentiment to miss slippy knickers: "I'm sorry. Thank you" in reference to another one of his fuckups she enlightened him about in the episode. Phew! Gillette-tastic!

I also just love the way any and all technological miracles seem to be described as "quantum XYZ" - quantum engines, quantum bubbles etc. If only people had realised what excellent applications the Copenhagen interpretation would have in the future for top-notch sci fi perhaps it wouldn't have been so maligned!

Perhaps I should be clear, being a Brit, that I'm not being anti-American sci-fi with this merciless ripping session - I adore DS9 and Farscape, for example, amongst innumerable other series and films. The Orville is something else though and it's just tickling me to death. kthnx.

No worries. I have been having the same amused reaction to this show about the natural inferiority of straight white men. They've got no wisdom, and they are dependent on women, people of color, and homosexuals to understand things for them.

RE: The Orville
Last few episodes I've been saying aloud "stupid man" and then laughing whenever males do something stupid, and "pathetic man" whenever males do something pathetic...opportunities are ubiquitous therefore the lol factor. There have been zero opportunities to say "stupid/pathetic woman" thus far, which is also doubtless central to the lol factor. Truly, something else. Can't wait to see what season 2 has got in store!

S01E12 - season finale and miss slippy knickers is finally elevated to the status of deity by simple folk who mistake her for a god, then she tries to convince the "church boss" (complete with Popely white robes and mitre) that she isn't in fact "Jesus Christ", but that doesn't work so she offers to sacrifice her life for them (JC much?). In the end there's no need and it's all resolved, with black envoy man and woman representing the now enlightened, progressive, reasonable civilisation. Stupid whitey man captain acknowledges it was his fault for being "overprotective" of miss slippy knickers, and she dumps him for this, being infallibly awesome (they were giving things another shot), and he says she's right to do that, but that he's still in love with her anyway. Perfect!

No no, never mind, I'm sure I'm just being thick and the species makes perfect sense and isn't just a Gillette ad esque vessel to "comically"  have a pop at toxic masculinity/masculinity/men. That's a relief - I was convinced the program was a hilariously ill conceived and executed farcical mess there for a minute. Phew.

Yeesh, no need to be fucking catty, homes. I didn't realize we were mulling over the fucking intricacies of gender politics. I thought we were just talking about whether the girl baby was a miracle or a regular occurrence. Not that fucking important. Just a TV show, brah.

Now who's being catty? I just thought you were, like, trying to "defend" the integrity of the show so posted sarcy. The show's just incredibly sexist, racist and inept IMO to the point of utter hilarity! Awesome! Love it! Anybody want me to write my reading of S2E01? It's another cracker, honest! I'll probably write it anyway ed.

Yeah, you're being a douche, so I douched you back. You'll live. I'm not trying to defend the show. I'm pointing out that you're posting inaccuracies to bolster your weird "OMG, they're attacking my white masculinity" take. You must be pretty insecure to take a show this personally.

I haven't posted an "inaccuracy" let alone the plural. The Moclus species makes zero sense. Egg laying males etc. YMMV on the precise interpretation of "Mary-esque miracle" in the context of the absurdity of the species, but that's really not my problem.

I'm not feeling attacked, I'm being amused - highly amused. If the situation were reversed and all black people and women were being portrayed as stupid/pathetic and all other males as awesome in a mainstream show like this would you be calling out any women or black people who thought that was hilarious, telling them they're insecure and are being douches - let alone if they were actually pissed off and said "this isn't on!" ? Basically mega double standards on your part Shell B and if you can't see that might I suggest a trip to the "opticians."

Oh well, at least you changed your original comment, "pointing out" that the captain is a white male. And you call me "not very bright." And will you two stop putting words/feelings into my mouth/brain?! I'm not angry or upset, just amused - highly!
