"Hail Satan?" (2019)

"Hail Satan?" (2019)

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

While The Satanic Temple has certainly done a few interesting things, I find them to mostly be copy-cats of the Official Church of Satan, founded in 1966 by Anton LaVey. There are some philosophical differences, the main ones being that the CoS is very much in favor of social stratification and vengeance on one's enemy, whereas The Satanic Temple espouses seven tenets which are much more about compassion and love. The Satanic Temple is, in some senses, a watered down version of LaVey's original Church of Satan. I find it mostly pointless to make such of offshoot of Satanism, but I suppose like with any movement, people will break off and try to make it there own, which is probably why there are so many Christian denominations. People will take one movement and agree with everything within that movement but a few things and decide an entirely new movement needs to be created. Human nature, I suppose.

I'd probably find myself aligned with the beliefs held by the Church of Satan much more than The Satanic Temple, though, to be honest. The film I linked above is all about the Church of Satan, and how they were basically sort of just normal people who had some pretty hippy ways about them (they did start in the 60s).

That being said, I think TST does some cool stuff and would be interested to see their film.

Yeah, I tried to gin up some personal interest in this non-religion religion.  I failed spectacularly.

From the Satanists I've spoken with, Satanism isn't something you "gin up some... interest in." You either get it or don't. You either identify with the teachings or don't. It's very much unlike conventional religions where you're required to adhere to its tenets, regardless of personal interest. You either see yourself reflected in the writings, or you don't. And if you see yourself reflected in the writings, you go in deeper. One Satanist told me, "Satanism requires study, not faith."

I can't say I would call myself a Satanist necessarily, but I certainly like the whole "Itheism" thing they've started.

Meh. They keep 99.9% of the American lifestyle intact, and pretend they're different.

What do you have to back up that claim?

In contrast, here is an intelligent person:

She understands irony and self-criticism. She didn't just buy her rebellion out of a catalog. What she says is far more helpful than puffing yourself up by poking people in the eye.

Since you just straight up avoided my question, I'll assume you have no answer.

Assuming that Satanists "buy [their] rebellion out of a catalog" is another totally baseless claim.

Fascinating video. I especially enjoyed her comments on Ricky Gervais' jokes about trans people. It's just not funny coming from a person who isn't trans. It's more like a little bit scary to a person who is trans. To actually be funny, it has to come from those who are actually in the crossfire, and not from bystanders who are capitalizing on it.

Anton Lavey came off as just being a spiritually bored individual who capitalized titillating satanic nonsense. Atheists playing games with satanism are boring, because there is nothing about a satanic atheist that can be taken seriously. It is essentially just a form of cultural misappropriation and probable misrepresentation.

I have heard rumors that there really are satanic Catholic priests and nuns. I don't know if it's true. But I sort of suspect that large religious sects who believe that there is such a being as satan will have a few members who secretly worship him because of some sincere religious belief and sincere reasons. That would be 'real' satanism.

In Judaism, we had a guy go darkside and taught a rather 'dark' Judaism in which they practiced purification through intentional transgression. His name was Jacob Frank. He caused a lot of trouble, such as causing all copies of the Talmud in Poland to be burned. He lived about 250 years ago. His cult lasted for quite awhile and was considered to be absolutely evil to every Jew that was not a member of it. It was our equivalent of satanism. Every once in awhile, I will run into some young Jew who claims to be a Frankist. That young Jew is always completely uninteresting because I know that they don't really believe anything, and they are dabbling with Frankism because they are bored and think that being a Frankist makes them esoteric and shocking. They're not. But if I were to meet an educated Jew who has been very religiously observant and became a Frankist sincerely-- that would be interesting. Very interesting.
