 I guess that depends on whether you are a victim or a perpetrator.

Certainly a lot cheaper to kill murderers and child rapers rather than  keep them locked  up for 50 years. Pretty sure  the purely pragmatic, economical argument cannot be refuted.

Fortunately,  I live in a society which does not always follow the purely pragmatic. If I wanted to liven a country more like that, I'd move to the US.

 Actually it isn't cheaper not just for 50 years but for the rest of their lives .

Are we in the dark though, there is a lunge to the right everywhere you look at the moment. How many times have I seen people "why I left the left" stories on in the internet, all of them full of right wing dog whistles. 

I suppose we are just going through one of those retrograde steps where society takes a backwards step. 
A shame.

I guess my answer would be that there's a big difference between being a fanatical tory/republican etc advocate, campaigner and financial supporter and gunning down 50 civilians.
