Ronald Reagan AIDS speech, 1987

I was watching this "important" speech by Ronald Reagan and his supposed measures to fight AIDS where it was even one of the first times Reagan even said the word "AIDS" in public
And what he proposes in the speech is ridiculous: His measures for fighting AIDS are testing heterosexuals at marriage license bureaus, but very few of these people were infected with the virus and very few lives would be saved. There is little talk about education and no guarantees or civil rights protection for those who tested positive. Not to mention that he never even mentioned gays. So it seems Reagan’s program did very little to actually stop the spread of AIDS.
It kind of all looks like a giant joke, especially since he basically started the speech with a joke (imagine addressing a topic of a holocaust and then telling jokes). And not just a joke but a creepy joke about charity committee and how wealthiest man in town doesn't give money to sick people - you know like Reagan's handling of AIDS: He hadn't ascribed much importance or funding priority to any other non-armaments program during his presidency, why should he have given any to AIDS?
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

Watch the movie, "And the Band Played On". Ronald Reagan did everything in his power not to talk about AIDS.

I guess you weren't alive in the 80s. There was a lot of fear and very little understanding at that time about AIDS and homosexuality.
You're not going to see this bit today, I'm pretty sure.

Yeah, I'm surprised he's managed to dodge the Cosby effect so far tbh.

Yeah, Reagan funneled the money to rich people so they can buy more yachts and then when Rock Hudson died and it was suddenly discovered that virus was already pandemic in the nation, they just blamed the victims with the help of Christian organizations. I mean when Rock Hudson died there were already something like 12,000 Americans dead or dying of AIDS and hundreds of thousands more were infected.
What is also interesting is that writer of the book "And the Band Played On" died of AIDS shortly after the book was published.

So sad; I did not know that.
I remember the early 1980s very well, especially, the 1980 election where Reagan defeated Jimmy Carter. What a loss for our nation and for the World! At that time I was a brainwashed evangelical Christian, and we were all gathered in our pastor's parsonage, watching the returns on national TV. It was the Evangelicals who propelled Reagan into power, whom, after which, he ignored; the AIDS victims were too much of a political hot potato for him. I was taught that AIDS was a punishment from God against the sin of homosexuality.

Kudos to C Everett Koop - Reagan era Surgeon General. Reagan wanted him to downplay the use of condoms to prevent the spread of HIV. Koop did anyway, very possibly saving lives when there was no treatment.
