I know. Someone on FB posted an encounter recently with a  theist co worker who doubted the size of the sun being bigger than the earth because it looked so small in the sky.

Of course it is going to look small in a mere photograph. But it is no different than knowing that an 18 wheeler truck is just as big off in the far distance approaching you on the opposite side of the highway. As soon as it gets next to you, you see how big it really is.

55 million light years away is going to make such a big object look small.

Show that person a clip from Father Ted of Ted trying to explain to Dougal that cows aren't really small "Close up. Far away!"

Even with giant stadiums. I can remember going to several NFL games, and sitting close to the field and how big the players looked, and how long the field look center at the 50 yard line 10 rows back, vs other games where I got tickets at top of Mt Everest looking down and the players looked like ants.

Oh, that's swell.  I mean, that's just abso-fucking-lutely peachy keen.  I post a picture of an electron - a goddamned ELECTRON for fuck's sake - and nobody says 'boo'. You lot just carry on, business as usual.

And here you all are, just fecking wetting your collective pants over a picture of a black hole.

Um not sure if you are yanking our chain here, but this has been all over the news today.

Atom, black hole, the theist is still going to argue one of two things.

1. "God did it."

or

2. " Science doesn't know everything."

More liberal theists start with "God did it" but can and have back peddled to "science doesn't know everything" when called out on it.

The fundy theists are more likely to do the opposite.

They start out with "Science is crap" then back peddle with, "Ok fine, but God did it, and you will still burn you in hell if you don't pick my sect."
