It's sad that in the 21st century this should still be a concern.

At home, Oz, there is still an undercurrent of racism among some of the white Australian community.

The last time I was home I heard at least a few people complain about the "bloody abbos".

It's certainly less than when I was growing up, but it's still there. Not sure if it's diminished or just gone underground.

While I don't think it is statistically likely that you will fall victim to a white cop (particularly since you are female), there can be no denial that white police officers are far more likely to open fire on a black, male suspect than any other and it MUST stop! I was giddy with optimism when Barack Obama was elected President of the United States. I thought it would bury racism forever. Unfortunately, it had the opposite effect. It made racism fashionable again. Like cockroaches who ran under the refrigerator when the light was turned on, the election of Obama drew them back out when they thought the light was turned off.

We must all do our part to drill it into their heads that the light is still on. Racism is NOT acceptable.

I'd love to think that police would be trained to be able to tell the very distinctive white cane blind people carry from something that's actually intended to hurt people. But then again, looking it up, I found policemen in BRITAIN tasing a blind person for their cane (and he was white!) Et in Arcadia ego. If British coppers can make such an elementary mistake, I see no reason cops in a behavioral sink like America can't make the same mistake.

And the sad thing is this problem is so intertwined with so many difficult topics, from the obvious suspects of race and class to the simple fact of what dealing with the worst society has to offer can do to the psyche of a heavily armed man, that I strongly suspect it can't be fixed. Why, yes, that does suck.
