teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

The largest country in the world (China) is more or less atheist. They are also a majority in many parts of Europe and the West Coast. It is a reality for many atheists because many of them get ostracized by their Christian families (not to mention to what happens to those in Muslim families). For instance, Dan Baker got divorced by his wife. Thinking Atheist also has problems with his family, as does Hemant Mehta. Paulogia was ostracized by his whole community once he became an atheist and his wife divorced him so he can see his kids only occasionally. And so on. Theists sure like to criticize Scientologists, but Christians and muslims indulge in the same cult behavior because it's not a "cult behavior" but religious behavior.

Regions in Scandinavia, Germany, Czechia, France, and pretty much anywhere in Europe you will find regions with a majority of atheists and non-religious people. Invisible but not undetectable. I do consider it a bad thing, incidentally, but how my statement gives that impression is a mystery to me.
Believe in it enough, and anything is detectable due to personal, subjective bias. Which is to state what one merely thinks has been personally detected does not necessarily exist outside of the ever mindful concept.
