At the Catholic school I attended I was taught there are no unforgivable sins. That the greatest sin is despair.
As a recovering Catholic,I can assure the OP I had a very clear understanding of the nature of sin.; whatever the Church said it was. EG when I was growing up,eating meat on Friday was a mortal sin,for which you could go to hell. I shit you not

You will not find that trash anywhere in the Bible. I was Catholic to at one early point in my life. Coming from Louisiana it was not hard to put down a burger on Friday and swap it out for an oyster poboy. Religion does give God a bad name. Thay is why i trust the Bible and not the religions of man. Christ is my salvation, the Word of God is my only authority. 95% of religious people are going to destruction with the rest of the non believers. Not my words but what Jesus said himself. "Few they be that find it." The Greek word "oglios" for few means a puny ammount. Jesus saves not religion.

This is interesting. Do you know if this is a common teaching in the Catholic church or was isolated to your school?
I have entertained the possibility that the unforgivable sin doctrine was the result of some sort of mistranslation/misinterpretation of the Bible. One would assume that a doctrine like this would somewhat parallel that of the Catholics. I don't see why this wouldn't be so, but then again my knowledge of Catholicism is somewhat minimal especially when it comes to doctrine.
BTW, out of curiosity what's the origins of the don't eat meat on friday doctrine? I recall reading something about it in a history book but I can't remember fully. Anyone know?

Do you realize that this response differed from that in the article?
This demonstrates my biggest beef with this doctrine. It's supposed to be the big, ultimate no no in the Bible yet no one understands exactly what it is. If a big no no exists then shouldn't god (the same god who supposedly wrote the first 5 books of the Bible) kind of make it clear what exactly it is?
BTW I have been questioning doctrine for 3 decades now and the responses have always been varied.
Well I got that answer from an Fundamentalist preacher named John MacArthur, which I have been reading transcripts of his sermons on the site Grace to You.

My school did not have its own peculiar interpretations of doctrine as far as I'm aware.I've always thought the protestant notion of unforgivable sin to be absurd--IF God possesses infinite qualities of love,compassion and forgiveness, he must and willl forgive literally ANY sin,as long as forgiveness is sought.
That is end of my limited interest in this topic. I have not been a believing Catholic for over 40 years. Today,my interest is mildly academic.Mainly,my feelings are of a visceral loathing for the Catholic Church as a corrupt and parasitic institution, which is a carbuncle on the arse of humanity.I have a much lower opinion of the evangelicals and other dogmatic fundamentals.

I was under the impression that Catholics believed the only unforgiveable sin was suicide because you were unable to repent.
