35 years ago, four members of the Abu Nidal terrorist group attempted to hijack Pan Am Flight 73 on the ground in Karachi, Pakistan. Targeting Americans, the terrorists shot and killed an Indian-American and threw his body onto the tarmac. They then ordered to head purser on the flight, Neerja Bhanot, to produce the passports of all passengers so they could identify any more Americans on board and kill them as well. Bhanot and other members of the flight crew were able to hide the passports of the 44 Americans on board.

17 hours into the incident, the hijackers began firing guns and setting off explosives, fearing a commando attack on the aircraft. Bhanot was able to open the emergency exits. Rather than jump to safety, the purser stayed aboard and was helping passengers to get out when, while body-shielding three children at the exit, Bhanot was shot point blank by one of the terrorists and was killed.

Addendum: Three days ago, I learned one may not be casual in handling those hand held steamers. Second degree burn on my foot. The Machine was in fact stuffed. I bought a new one on Ebay, and am determined to be heaps more carfeful.

Probably not the milk bit, but just prior to the Great Hunger, the average daily diet of an adult Irishman consisted of eight pounds of potatoes, and precious little else.

Before the famine, the population of Ireland was about 8 million.  Today, Southern Ireland has  4.94 million. Combined with Northern Ireland, the the total is 6.8 million.

I read that the reason for the famine cause by the potato  blight was that for a couple of million Irish, their diet was mainly potatoes and oats.

 A myth? I think we must have been reading different sources. Be most interested in seeing your supporting evidence.

I used the term 'Southern Ireland' to give an idea of where I went back packing. It was not my intention to offend. However I do not usually refrain from comments because they may give offence .

I'm aware of the belief many in the Republic of Ireland that the Republic  and northern Ireland are one country.  Not in a legal sense, as far as I know. (this was made obvious with Brexit)  Emotionally is another matter entirely and one I won't argue.

My position is that no country has right to exist. Changes occur continuously.    I love my country, which makes me a patriot.  However, Australia is not an idea for which I'm willing to die or support others in dying unless my country is directly attacked.   I am not willing to die for vague ideas such as 'freedom' or 'unity'. I will never support a civil war.
