Existentialists and absurdists can both believe in meaning and value. Nihilists™ -also- do that, but they do it at a detriment to their position. That's the negotiation I was talking about before. People who call themselves nihilists, yourself included, qualify their nihilism. Moral realism is interesting even if it's false because, if false, then alot of other things that nihilists, for example..do accept as a part of that negotiation, must also be false. The existentialist thinks that we can create real value. The absurdist thinks that there's some real value that exists, but not in this world.

I learned it in order to argue against moral realism, on these boards. Turned out a different way.

Interesting.
Why do you think that way about nihilism, absurdism etc?
(Edit: What I mean is did you get your ideas on those philosophies from particular books, articles, YT lectures etc?)

I had a friend in high school who thought I was a nihilist. I don't think I was. Well I definitely am not one anymore.

I do not believe that this world is a lost cause, and I do not feel hopeless. If anything, my personal ideology is about as optimistic as it gets. I refuse to give up. Life is good, and if something happened that was so bad that it made me give up, that would be tragic, and a lot worse than simply living life. We must make the most of our lives while we can.

I don't think nihilists have to feel hopeless and be pessimistic, that seems just a stereotype.
But aside from attitudinal things, what beliefs do you hold that put you outside of nihilism?

IDK. That whole "life is in vain" quote from earlier? That's Nietzsche describing nihilism.

You were mentioning that the idea that nihilists would feel hopeless and be pessimistic was a stereotype. Hopelessness and pessimism are explicit in nihilism. Granted, most nihilists™ don't feel that way, as Boru noticed before, it's not a source for excess mortality, lol.

I don't think nihilists have to feel hopeless and be pessimistic. That is a stereotype.
Some don't feel hopeless and pessimistic. Even Nietzsche wasn't all doom and gloom. I found his writings tended to be more uplifting than Nausea or The Stranger. But it doesn't matter. Feeling a certain way isn't a requirement to being a nihilist.
