Any Nihilists here?
RE: Any Nihilists here?
Life is in vain..is, again, a quote from nietzsche describing nihilist pathos.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Life is vain. It has no objective purpose or meaning or value.
Doesn't mean you can't enjoy it.

But if you hold to certain positions then you are a nihilist, or Christian, or whatever, regardless of disposition or mood.

Christ almighty, nevermind, lol. Giddy Nihilist would be a good band name though.

Can I ask again what sources of information on these philosophies you'd recommend to see them the way you do?

Obviously my source for that last comment was a nobody who didn't know a thing about nihilism.

So your key source is Nietzsche for nihilism. Any others? And any of Nietzsche's works in particular?

And what for absurdism and existentialism?

Premise: A true nihilist wouldn't even bother talking about nihilism.

Conclusion: There are no true nihilists.

Camus and Sartre, obviously, would be a good place. I could give you some contemporaries but contemporary philosophers do tend to be extremely narrow in their context. Rather than the broad strokes about a particular metaethical theory, they'll needle in on a single aspect of a single metaethical theory. Shelley Kagan is probably one of my favorite contemporary realists - focuses on moral dessert and how it routinely (and predictably!) modifies our moral conclusions, and as a bonus he's got a good narrative voice and style. I tend to like the ones that see the main issue in their preferred philosophy and just own it. Kagan, for example, deflates nuts by agreeing that, as a realist, he also doesn't think that life or morality offers any "ultimate value" or "ultimate meaning".

@ Boru

Pretty much. We're complicated and compromised. What can I say, I agree with the original nihilist on this one. I think that the best we can do is intellectual nihilism. Just a tick of biology.

What's a true nihilist?
Is it like a true Christian, or true absurdist, or true Scotsman?

Cool. I haven't listened/read to much Kagan. Maybe that's the key area of difference that has led to our differing views about nihilism and absurdism.
