^Even as elementary school kids we were issued a box of little envelopes with our names on them to put our money in for the collections baskets that were passed around at mass. As a kid, the church was tracking who gave how much.

I'll say one thing. Local churches can have some mercy at the lower levels. My mother put an envelope in the basket every week, at the risk of food in our mouths. Somebody there cut a refund check for her at the end of the year, from the church's checking account.
