RE: Strange science 😦
Aliens are not in our solar system after all. New proposition says that aliens are lazy couch potatoes.

Quote:Why aliens are (probably) too lazy to make first contact

A NASA scientist has proposed an unexpectedly down-to-Earth solution to one of astronomy’s most enduring mysteries: why we’ve never heard from other alien civilisations.

In the study, which was published on the preprint server arXiv and is yet to be peer-reviewed, Dr Robin Corbet of the University of Maryland and NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Centre argues that the answer could simply be ā€œmundaneā€.

In this ā€œless terrifyingā€ Universe, there may be a modest number of technological civilisations scattered through the Milky Way, none of which have achieved or desired the galaxy-spanning capabilities imagined by science fiction.

That means no Dyson spheres, no planet-wide laser beacons and no fleets of probes zipping across the vastness of space.

Even if interstellar travel were technically possible, Corbet wrote, ā€œthe benefits obtained must outweigh the cost and potential risks.ā€

Eventually, any civilisation might find that ā€œnot much new was found from each encounterā€ with other alien civilisations and lose motivation to keep searching – a galactic version of scientific burnout.

Corbet likened this to a form of cosmic habituation, where ā€œa creature’s response to a repeated stimulus diminishesā€. If most civilisations hit a technological ceiling, they might decide that sending probes or beacons across the Galaxy is simply pointless, not worth the effort or dangerous.

In such a world, humanity’s own radio searches would likely detect only weak ā€œleakageā€ signals rather than deliberate messages.

ā€œA detection… may not be too far off, historically speaking,ā€ Corbet concluded.

ā€œAlthough this would have profound implications in many ways, it may not lead to a huge gain in our technology level, and could leave us somewhat disappointed.ā€

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

These researchers say they have serious questions about UFOs, aliens

A group of researchers say it's time for academia to get serious about studying UFOs.

Michael Cifone, who holds a Ph.D. in the philosophy of science from the University of Maryland, College Park, is hoping the study of UAPs can become the subject of serious, rigorous academic study, with the same scientific objectivity of any discipline.

He's the nonprofit's executive director and co-founder along with Michael Silberstein, a philosophy professor at Elizabethtown College. Cifone is currently a research fellow at the Center for Alternative Rationalities in Global Perspectives at Friedrich-Alexander University in Germany.

The Society for UAP Studies' board of advisors, advisory council and leaders include dozens of academics from all over the world, representing a variety of disciplines including philosophy, law, the sciences and humanities.

"We're not necessarily taking a position" on whether UAPs are evidence of extraterrestrial life, or what their existence could mean for humanity's understanding of its place in the universe, he said. "But we are interested in taking on these topics that don't fit neatly anywhere. As academics, our skill is in establishing a framework so we're not simply speculating, but situating it within historical, cultural and scientific frameworks."

He realized that "while (the study of UAPs) was a topic of ridicule, there was still something strange and odd for which there seemed to be some good anecdotal evidence and witness evidence, evidence that was not easily dismissible by conventional analysis."

It wasn't just ordinary people reporting strange, unexplained sights. In 2004, U.S. Navy pilots and radar operators aboard the U.S.S. Nimitz and the U.S.S. Princeton reported seeing "anomalous aerial vehicles,ā€ or AAVs high above where commercial and military craft can fly, performing maneuvers that seemed impossible to their trained eyes. In 2024, Congress conducted hearings on the issue, and the Pentagon, while saying it found no definitive evidence of extraterrestrial beings, also said there were "definitely anomalies."

Cifone said the society's goals are to bring scientific and academic rigor to phenomena that to many is still a fringe idea. They're not trying to convince anyone, including themselves.

Aliens will be found by 2075, top scientist insists - 'I am absolutely convinced life is out there'

One of Britain's top space scientists has declared she is 'absolutely convinced' there are aliens out there – and they will be found within the next 50 years.

Dame Maggie Aderin–Pocock, from University College London's Department of Physics and Astronomy, said she expects a 'positive detection' of life on another planet by 2075.

'Grey sludge is probably the most likely thing we're going to find,' Dame Maggie said. However, there's a chance we could find something more sophisticated.

'We might find something that does evolve and that can communicate – and of course, their technology might be far superior to ours,' she added.

'I love the idea of aliens on the other side of the moon looking back at us, hoping we'll "grow up" soon.'

If – and when – we find life, we will have to be 'incredibly careful' about how we handle it, she warned.

'If there is any form of life, we need to make sure it is totally isolated,' she said. 'It cannot come into contact with any sort of human presence.

'But we're building facilities to do just that so we can analyse them. Because it's hard to take all our scientific equipment to Mars, for example, but if we can bring samples from Mars to Earth and analyse them here on Earth, we can get a lot more understanding.

'Of course, the ultimate solution is to send me. Some people retire and potter around their garden, and my retirement plan is to potter around Mars.'

On an unrelated note, Maggie Aderin–Pocock holds a doctorate. I find it a travesty that the silly chivalry title 'Dame' apparently takes precedence over 'Doctor' in Britain.
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

Uh huh, and how much taxpayer money do they need to resolve them this time?

Avi Loeb wanted a billion dollars from congress to study UFOs.

Quote:Let us be honest: there are objects in the sky that we do not understand. When we do not understand what 85% of the matter in the universe is, we invest billions of dollars to find out the nature of that dark matter. Given that the U.S. government reports about Unidentified Anomalous Objects (UAPs), I say: let us invest a billion dollars in figuring out their nature through rigorous scientific research.

On the day before the congressional briefing, I visited the Pentagon and echoed these sentiments. If we do not find evidence for extraterrestrial technologies, I will be proud that the AI tools and sensors being developed will be used to protect our nation against human-made terrestrial threats.

The scientific study of UAP offers a unique opportunity to spend a billion dollars on AI and frontier science and make taxpayers happy.

The Universe Is Intelligent—And Your Brain Is Tapping Into It to Form Your Consciousness, Scientist Says

The universe has no brain. It has no gray matter, no nervous system, no neurons firing electrical impulses—and yet, that physical structure may not be where intelligence and consciousness actually come from. Intelligence may exist and evolve on its own, without emerging within living organisms.

This is the latest hypothesis from biophysicist and mathematician Douglas Youvan, PhD, who spent decades working at the intersection of physics, biology and information theory.

ā€œI began to see that life and intelligence weren’t just reactive—they were predictive, efficient, and often mathematically elegant,ā€ Youvan said in an interview earlier this year. ā€œEventually, I came to believe that intelligence is not a byproduct of the brain, but a fundamental property of the universe—a kind of informational ether that certain structures, like the brain or an AI model, can tap into.ā€

ā€œI suspect intelligence originates from what might be called an informational substrate of the universe—a pre-physical foundation where structure, logic, and potentiality exist prior to space and time,ā€ he said.

Whatever this process is, it is also evolving on its own in a recursive way, much like the fractal structures visible in structures ranging from crystals to entire galaxies: copy-pasting themselves and occurring at smaller and smaller scales. Our neurons are supposedly made to interface with this outside intelligence because of their own fractal structure, according to Youvan.
