teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

This is why I find the term "skilled debater" for a Christian apologist to be self-defeating—if someone had something truthful to say, he wouldn't need to be a skilled debater but just state the facts. Otherwise, you just tell lies, but you tell them in a convincing way.

Debating actually requires a lot more than just stating facts. If that was all there was to it, you could simply leave a biology textbook on the lectern, then walk off the stage and go have a cup of tea.
