I haven't used one, yet, though I was considering using one as a media server client. I still might.
It's my understanding that they can handle HD video, I see no reason that one wouldn't do well in your application.

Why don't you buy a smart-TV, which does all you want out of the box?
It is a bit more expensive, but it saves you a lot of power cables, at least...
