Well a lot of people are jumping on the OP saying she is generalizing or stereotyping. I gotta throw something in here.

Quote:What people call “stereotypes” are what scientists call “empirical generalizations,” and they are the foundation of scientific theory. That’s what scientists do; they make generalizations. Many stereotypes are empirical generalizations with a statistical basis and thus on average tend to be true. If they are not true, they wouldn’t be stereotypes. The only problem with stereotypes and empirical generalizations is that they are not always true for all individual cases. They are generalizations, not invariant laws. There are always individual exceptions to stereotypes and empirical generalizations. The danger lies in applying the empirical generalizations to individual cases, which may or may not be exceptions. But these individual exceptions do not invalidate the generalizations.

Anyway, I like women. And I was raised by very affectionate, intelligent, highly educated women. So that probably has a lot to do with my own personal views.

However, I have noticed a few things about most women.

1) Practically every woman I have ever had a relationship has said pretty much the following, "Women are bitches. Most of my friends are guys." When I asked what they meant they usually say they compete too much against each other, even among friends, and they're catty.

2) Most women appear to have zero self esteem unless they are in a relationship. This personally drives me up the wall. Most women are in a new relationship in less than a month after any breakup. Hell, the shortest amount of time I've had between relationships was around a year. After a break up, I don't want to deal with a relationship so soon. I'll just hang out with the guys and fart around for a while. Women seem to immediately try and find their next boyfriend. An old joke about women: "Women are like monkeys. They don't let go of one branch until they have ahold of the next one." Funny. But it's kinda true.

Other than that I find women very enjoyable. But I would say, IMO, that guys tend to be more laid back than women on average.

Rahul, the difference being scientists don't walk around a mall and then decide they know what's what. Everything is recorded to prevent observation bias. Not to mention experiment design to minimize human error and bias.

My point was, despite modern culture continually claiming that stereotypes are false, stereotypes are accurate generalizations.

There are accurate stereotypes and inaccurate ones. Stereotype is not by definition true or false. But one based on "general observation" as you and Kereli have raised, are inherently unscientific and holds no water. Simply because of sample bias and personal bias. I posted 2 articles just a page back that discussed findings about men gossiping as much as women do but in a different way, yet the cultural consensus is that women gossip more than men.

Splitting hairs. Stereotypes are an adaptive generalization because humans can't know the exact details of every individual that is alive. They exist because they are usually accurate. Science be damned. Humans created a lot of adaptive mental constructions that assisted our survival before the modern scientific method was created. Stereotypes are accurate more often than they are false.

Scientifically accurate? Maybe not. Holds water? Yep.

Are there individuals that go against stereotypes? Of course. It doesn't change the fact that for the most part stereotypes fit.

Some are played up for laughs. We all learn in school that True/False questions should be considered false if absolute words like 'always' or 'never' are contained in a statement. Just because you can locate one stereotype as being plausibly incorrect does not negate the fact that stereotypes exist because A) they are usually correct and B) they help us in some manner.

Ok, so the stereotype about driving. Culturally the stereotype is that women can't drive. But in practice men pay more insurance because they're thought to be worse drivers. Which one holds water?

Stereotypes exist because our brains like to classify things. But we aren't exactly evolved to live with large groups of people, we're not equipped to handle large amounts of observational information accurately, so we extrapolate from our interaction with the small group of people (selection bias here) to everyone. Not to mention confirmation bias.

Yes, one that doesn't fit doesn't make it wrong, but you can't have it both ways. Just because one sample happens to fit your stereotype doesn't make it right.

RE: My misogyny
The problem isn't that I'm generalizing. No one here really has a problem with generalizations. Everyone who has criticized me for making them makes them themselves.

The problem is the nature of my generalizations. They simply don't want to hear NEGATIVE generalizations about WOMEN. And that right there is the real issue. That's why they're arguing with me, not because I'm wrong, but because it makes them extremely uncomfortable to hear negative generalizations about women. That's all it is. Even the fact that I myself am a woman doesn't change anything, in fact it makes them even more uncomfortable.

But I tell you what. I haven't had even 10% of the criticism that a man would get if he showed up here and said the things that I've said.

So, as much as Rahul has a very valid point about generalizations and stereotypes, it really isn't necessary, since no one is actually against generalizations or stereotypes (despite what they may say). What is really rattling cages is the fact that I'm making NEGATIVE generalizations about WOMEN. If I came here making negative generalizations about MEN, it would be a very different story.

Oh, gosh, where to begin?

I hold off on responding to some threads until I can get a feel for the individual posting.

You, my dear, are a cunt. Not just because you have one, but because you are one.

You hate women, and you are one? What kind of impression does that give us about you? It informs us that you hate who you are. If you hate yourself, why should we give a shit about you and what you post?

Obviously, if you cannot care about yourself, you cannot logically provide a valid opinion in regard to your position on misogyny.

Kindly, take your cunt off this site. I would state go fuck yourself, but you do not have a dick and something informs me you abhor dildos as well.
