I hope it gets better.
I thought the presentation was phenomenal but a few times, especially when Tyson digressed about meeting Sagan and wanting to grow up the be the type of man he was, I felt myself hearing Christians shouting through their TV, "And they say their religion isn't Scientism!" Not that I think the statement has any validity to it, but those are the type of people I hope more special effects and presentation of facts can persuade (with less of Tyson's goofiness).

I didn't think he was being goofy at all. I don't understand why saying Sagan made a profound influence on him would in any way equal "religion".

I don't know, I mean it didn't bother me much, I just felt like it was kind of cheesy--face it, Tyson is cheesy as hell. Like Bill Nye. I'm not saying he's not a great choice for this. I think he is. Kids will love his style (and the cartoons!) That and the fact that he's flying through space on a spaceship, though I appreciated it, I can see where some people, who already think the facts are fiction, won't be able to tell the difference. To them it will look like faith or belief in some Star-Trek style new age shit. This is purely my critique on the standpoint of marketing it to the people who aren't already aware of the value of science.

Why was it cheesy? I thought it was remarkably similar the way the original Cosmos was scripted - the language described a deep appreciation for the universe. If you've ever heard Tyson go off on an impassioned rant about these things, you'll find that this is the way he talks - albeit, scripting and video cams allow him to be a lot calmer.

C'mon, try to tell me Tyson isn't a cheese ball (go to 27:30...lol):

You're using a completely different show to explain why he was being cheesy on Cosmos?
Also, I grew up with Nye - Tyson doesn't come anywhere near the cheese level of Nye.

Just finished watching it (thanks YouTube) ....
FUCKING AWESOME! Yes Neil De Grass Tyson is one impassioned individual for his chosen field. Couldn't really see anyone else doing the job left by Carl Sagan.
Looking forward to Episode 2

True. I'll admit, it's purely a personal bias for me with Tyson. His personality reminds me of someone I knew growing up.

It was a decent introduction, but I was too impatient to love it. I know this is intended to get people motivated and awed by the scope of science, but I'm already there. I don't need the primer. I did love the ending where he talked about Sagan, though.
I can only hope that some young son or daughter of a creationist saw this and thought, "maybe what my parents are telling me is bullshit."

All true. What was presented was nothing new to us....still.
Looking forward to perhaps some new information in the second episode of this first series.
