Drugs, particularly new ones, are expensive because it takes a shitload of money to develop one, there's no guarantee of success, and the people developing them are not in it because of their big hearts - they want a huge payoff if it hits. I've seen over $100 million go into a drug only to have it fail phase 3 testing and become immediately worthless. If it had made it, believe me, they weren't giving it out for cost of production.

No shit, really? Wow, I had no idea. /sarcasm How does reformulating drugs about to fall off the patent rolls so they can be repatented fit into all of this? How about the corrupt system that pushes the newest drugs in lieu of equally effective non-patent alternatives? I've witnessed the health care system pushing the latest psych meds (often for off-label use) on people who were *unemployed and homeless* when alternatives that the patient might actually be able to afford (and might also be FDA approved for the condition being treated). Many of these drugs are out of patent protection outside of the U.S. They charge us more because they can. (March 25, 2014 at 6:26 pm)Cthulhu Dreaming Wrote: No shit, really? I don't think anyone wants to defend the drug industry. The one that is present in the US in so many ways COMPLETELY SUCKS.
I don't trust any drug, I always do my research using the MIMS, which is like a dictionary of all the drugs and there adverse effects. The instructions that come with some drugs only tell you little of there affects. I once has bad reflux that annoyed the hell out me, the doctor couldn't work out why, after I researched the drugs I was taking I found that one of them can cause reflux, so the doctor took me off that one and I never had reflux again.
I've been on a ton of different things over the years. Very little has helped. I'm only on perphenazine now, with a pinch of seroquel. It's supposedly for sleep, but I suspect it was mainly my psychiatrist trying to get me to back off suicide and stop believing my delusions. It appears to be doing that. Oddly enough, I'm not defensive about it. I've always protected those things, to the point that I thought that if I ever found myself like this, I'd stop taking the medication. I don't know what to do. I'm still sure I should kill myself, but my heart isn't in it anymore. (March 25, 2014 at 4:00 pm)futilethewinds Wrote: WOW. There's more where that came from; Wolf of Wall Street is available on Blu-Ray and DVD starting today. That said, when it happened to me, it was more just getting out of the bath to suddenly find I can barely stand upright.

A Doc recently prescribed me Nuvagil. It's a stimulant like a lot of ADHD meds and is also used to treat narcalepsy or those working jobs where they wanna fall asleep.
My insurance didn't cover it so I asked the pharmacy how much it would cost me for a month. 700$ I shit you not! hocked: Whot the fuck would pay for that if they weren't disgustingly rich? It aint like it's a medication that saves lives or anything. |
