Otherwise, it seems you were just looking for people to confirm your opinion, as you've shot down others who said things you didn't say in your OP (characters not from Hollywood movies), but have completely ignored mine. Is it because I'm new here? Is there a reason beyond what I believe to be the most obvious, if somewhat sad, conclusion?
Quill's pretty cool, I don't think it's that, dude. Not many people have seen Downfall though (I have, however ) so that might have something to do with it.

Yep, it's Homura, looking particularly badass, actually. God, she's so freaking cool.

That's true, although come to think of it there are quite a few anime heroines with men dominating their backstory too...
Oh, hey! Speaking of Hollywood movies, how about Pacific Rim? Mako was the one character with the most character development, does a lot of the heavy lifting in the action beats, and though she's got a male figure in her backstory, he hardly looms over her entire past.
Or Elsa from Frozen? The new Xmen movie has a couple of interesting things to say about this particular character trope too, where it concerns Mystique. I agree that these are rarities, but the ones that do exist are pretty much all gems.
