The Colts just tried this on 4th down:
I still don't understand why they thought that would work. New England got the sack (obviously) but the Colts were called for an illegal formation anyway.
Holy shit, who called that play? I predict Luck has about 0.13 seconds to get rid of the ball.
I think the current consensus is that it was an attempt at a trick play. The Colts weren't meant to snap the ball, but rather try and make the Patriots commit a penalty (offside). Colts head coach looked furious that they snapped the ball instead and caused the turnover (which a few plays later became a touchdown for the Pats).
We'll probably know more in the post-game conference, but that's going to go down as one of the worst plays ever.
No kidding - I showed that pic to Kitty (who likes football, but isn't versed at all on the nuances of different plays) and asked her "What is wrong with this picture?" She says "those two guys are gonna get creamed!".
Indeed. Why would you *ever* snap the ball in that spot? You call a timeout if the defense doesn't bite.
I chalk it up to the center exhibiting the early stages of multiple concussion syndrome.
Here's a video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6i7VKQwDS2s I love the penalty explanation by the ref. "Illegal formation. The whole right side of the line was not on the line of scrimmage." He keeps a straight face but you can see the hints of a smirk there.
that was one of the weirdest things I've ever seen.
The announcers spent twenty minutes basically going, "WTF?" after that play.
You could read the coach's lips on the sideline yelling, "Why did you snap the ball?" RE: 2015 NFL thread

BTW, a new trailer for the new Star Wars movie is set to debut at halftime of tonight's Monday Night Football game.
