I admit, I'm still pretty much searching for my purpose. But, I was even more lost when I was a Christian, sooo

"I have no advice for anybody; except to, you know, be awake enough to see where you are at any given time, and how that is beautiful, and has poetry inside. Even places you hate" -Jeff Buckley
Lol, no worries. There is absolutely no reason to rush into making a decision, or ever mamking one imo.
For me purpose is an ongoing thing, a movement a progress.
I used to chase goals but now when I aim for a goal, the purpose - for me personally, I'm not talking 'ultimate' or 'absolute' here - is found in pursuing the goal, the enjoyment, the fulfilment. If I just try to find 'purpose'; my aims, my goals - then the pursuit becomes meaningless and boring and frustrating; for me at least anyway. So at least for me purpose is an ongoing thing. And finding what my purpose and meaning is, is one of my main purposes and has a lot of meaning for me . I embrace the ongoing search now. I don't watch to reach a destination, before I always wanted to reach out for a destination and THEN move on after I reached it - but that still left with me not enjoying the moment. So purpose and meaning is basically an ongoing thing for me now. Perhaps the best word for it is :Fulfilment. And I seek satisfaction all the time but I never expect to be satisfied and I am not frustrated that I'm not... Well; certainly not so often anyway EvF
A Theist's Purpose in Life: To Be God's Love Slave
An Atheist's Purpose in Life: Anything Else
hehe lol!
In all seriousness I - perhaps, - only partly agree with your first line because it depends on the theist....some theists might think God allows them to be more free or 'gives them' freedom and they don't care so much for his 'rules' because they have a different interpretation...but yeah...a lot of theists, at least, kind of waste their life to some extent at least... Some a lot more than others. I think there's a bit of a continuum here: i.e some theists are less 'slaves' than others...and some perhaps have enough freedom to not really be slaving to their God. There is a degree of 'slaveness' I think - from total slave right up to totally free but they basically still have a silly false belief..how it effects others however; is perhaps another thing... They could be pretty free themselves but effect the freedom of others by converting them to bullshit... Perhaps a bit like how religious fundamentalists can come out of a religious moderate environment. As for your second line...very nicely put!!! Nice contrast too hehe EvF (March 18, 2009 at 3:51 am)athoughtfulman Wrote: Since religious people (especially christians) always argue that we atheists can have no purpose in life and therefore can never be happy, I thought it'd be interesting to find out what atheists do think their purpose is and what gives their life meaning. I am unconvinced that life has a purpose and don't dwell on the subject.
A man is born to a virgin mother, lives, dies, comes alive again and then disappears into the clouds to become his Dad. How likely is that?

maybe people don't need a real purpose in life.
The point is you HAVE life, and your purpose is to live it the purpose of life is to be lived
"Isn't it enough to see that a garden is beautiful with out having to believe there are fairies at the bottom of it to?" -Douglas Adams.
And it can't help but be lived by the living people
Whether they enjoy it or not EvF |
