Erdogan moves to cleanse the army, and, according to reports, already gave a few thousand judges the boot. The vaccancies will most certainly be filled with puppets. Thousands have been arrested. I don't think, direct involvement is a requirement to be arrested today.

If it wasn't as cynical, I really wouldn't rule out AKP involvement in last nights events. Seems as if Erdogan finally reached the end of his personal rainbow.

The fact that 2,745 judges were removed so soon indicates to me that a list had been drawn up prior to the coup. I don't subscribe to the tinfoiler "false-flag" thing, but clearly Erdogan's government had at the very least detailed contingency plans drawn up beforehand, and quickly seized the opportunity at hand.

To add to that post, I think it's entirely possible he had advanced notice of the coup and held his hand close to his chest ... in the meantime "making a list and checking it twice", ensuring he had sufficient forces at decisive points, with the aim of suborning the coup and turning it to his advantage.

I don't subscribe to Erdogan being directly involved either. An analyst gave some excellent points this morning. And they are the same as with every government conspiracy. Too many people have to be in on the job. Chances that nobody blows the whistle are slim at best.

Cleansing of the supreme court, cleansing of the army, cleansing of civil administrations. Regardless who was behind this coup, as Thumpa said, the plans for this were already existing. And now the threat of reintroducing capital punishment. Because the people wants it, as Erdogan claims.

I hope the EU shows more than verbal balls in this instance. They already made clear that a possible EU membership was unthinkable for a country enforcing the death penalty and that any negotiations would stop at that point. The Litmus test however comes when they actually reintroduce it.

As for the coup itself, our news assume that the military brass got wind of an imminent cleansing of it's ranks and acted prematurely. Which would play to the assumption of the plans being already drawn up at Erdogan's office.

We'll see with regards to the EU, I wouldn't hold my breath.

My comment was just to the number of judges.  I'd be surprised if Turkey had that many, if they did,. that would be all of them, pretty much.

My parents were planning on retiring over there in October.
