I read the book several times. Starting out when I was still a child. But it never reminded me of religion. If anything it reminds me of the past 16 years with us rapidly approaching what 1984 predicted - for lack of a better word.
Next to no privacy. Virtually every space of life is invaded, either by letting in the invaders voluntarily via social media and chat apps or by the authorities monitoring our communications on a large scale level. We haven't got the governments to make full use of the tools available as of yet. But fasten your seat belts if that ever is to happen. And that possibility is not as outworldly as it may seem. We even have our degenerative Newspeak, especially used by kids on their smartphones and chats.

Read it long ago. It was very powerful but I doubt even Orwell envisioned Drumpf.

Trump is getting free rent inside of your head isn't he?
1984 is a good and often misunderstood book. It's also led a million people to say that we are or about to live in a 1984 world, without really understanding Orwell or what he was critiquing all that much.

It does, but on a different level than what 1984 is about.

The story made me think of religion, the quran, the bible, government, even just general psychology of brainwashing yourself in order to fit in within day to day life, which I think people do all the time.
I don't think anyone really reads random books upon recommendations but I strongly STRONGLY recommend everyone to read this.
Anyone else read it? What did you think? I don't know what to read after this, I don't think any other book can match it.
Orwell was not anti government, just against blind worship of anything. You should like "Animal Farm" by him too.

I think the fact that animals are the main characters sort of takes away the seriousness of the story for me and spoils it.
Like if there was a muppets version of shindlers list.
Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.
Impersonation is treason.
