Ohio lawmakers pass ‘heartbeat’ abortion legislation

Ohio lawmakers approved a bill that bans abortion once a fetal heartbeat can be detected, as early as six weeks after conception, clearing the way for one of the most stringent abortion restrictions in the United States if it becomes law.

The Republican-led state House of Representatives and Senate passed the so-called “heartbeat” measure late on Tuesday, sending it to be signed into law by Republican Governor John Kasich.

Wow, that's so unrealistic. Most pregnancy tests can't even detect pregnancy hormone until at LEAST 2 weeks past conception which is considered 4 weeks pregnant. Meaning, not until a woman misses her period. And that's assuming she's always on schedule. Doesn't seem to afford women much time, does it? Especially considering you CAN get a fetal heart beat on ultrasound as early as 6 weeks! But, I guess that's the whole point, right? Decease the window of opportunity to practically zilch. Just Awful.

6 weeks after conception? That's not even right. I went to the ob 4 weeks after conception and the baby already had a heart beat by then. Heart beat starts 16 days after conception, not 6 weeks.

A heartbeat is not a test of viability.

Either way, this heartbeat bill doesn't pass muster, and won't stand in the face of review (unless the courts do a 180 suddenly from previous precedents), since it bans abortions far before the third trimester viability window.

Sorry, I meant that after 23-26 weeks, then the third trimester starts.  As in, the courts have upheld a woman's right to have an abortion before the third trimester.

I was 6 weeks pregnant, which is 4 weeks after conception. It's weird, but for some reason they start counting the pregnancy on the day of your last period, even though conception doesn't happen until about 2 weeks after that if your cycle is regular.
