Well, please don't tell Tom Arnold, Zooey Deschanel or Kate Capshaw for christs sake. Poor deluded bastards, thinking they really got in.

I wonder if she meant no one could get in or just that they aren't actively recruiting?

There's more truth to that than I care to admit.  Dodgy

All movements within Judaism do accept converts, but we don't make it easy. Also, conversions that are universally accepted are few and far between. -But that's an internal matter.

You're correct. We don't actively recruit.

I can work to change things within my own religion, but I generally leave other religions to work out their own problems unless I see that people are being harmed or they're trying to impose their values onto me.

It's like saying: "I don't know how the world works but I'll imagine it how I want it to be, because the reality can be scary". Why are they so emotionally connected to this, yet willing (or more likely) to change their opinion in every other aspect of life? And if they don't see their opinion as better, why are they insisting so much on it?

All of the religions you mentioned are by definition exclusive (explicitly rule out other possibilities/religions and claim they are the only way). The person you describe as 'moderate' is simply not an adherent and has invented their own version--a version you really can't then characterize as any of the three you mentioned. In other words, no person can redefine the words: "Christian", "Judiasm", and "Islam".

I think almost all humans are predisposed to believe in the supernatural so the result is that many create a hodgepodge of beliefs to satisfy that inclination--especially if they are not inclined to investigate and develop a systematic belief system.

I'm impressed and surprised you had the restraint to say 'almost all humans' there. But then you go the elitist route, and, most amusingly of all, take a shot at those you perceive as 'not investigating' when that's been the hallmark of religion since day 1. It's not often the blows come so softly that they can make me laugh instead of give me grey hairs.
Religions were invented to impress and dupe illiterate, superstitious stone-age peasants. So in this modern, enlightened age of information, what's your excuse? Or are you saying with all your advantages, you were still tricked as easily as those early humans?

RE: Moderate Religious
The only thing scarier than not knowing the truth, is believing you KNOW the truth and realizing that it sucks.

I think the more we learn, the more people will turn to religion to adding a sense of mystery-- and to take away the sense of relentless deterministic machinery that a purely mathematical world view holds for them. "Yeah, I'm on welfare, and an unwed mother of 7, but. . . I can feel God at work in my life!"

This gets people out of bed and at least TRYING to keep up a lot better than, "Yup, I'm fucked. Fuckity fuckity fucked. There's no hope for me ever to enjoy any day in my life ever again, because I've made too many mistakes, and there's nothing in the Universe that will change that."

If enough people wanted to change it, they could. And should. But that turning to religion shit ain't gonna help that happen.

Believing in fairies charges our mana battery?  It's turtles all the way down, with some people.

Or they've just succumbed to the inevitable self-deception that comes with the inherently irrational beliefs. That's why you don't open the door to that kind of thing. That way madness lies.

RE: Moderate Religious
The world is not just scary; it's more of a strange fishy reality. And that makes it scary.

If you think about it; there's a clock governing our life, there is a design that enforces itself on every activity we do.
Studying that design is called "science". It's not that we're smart so we can study it; it's the design itself that has doors and pathways which makes it possible to be studied by humans.

Ignoring all of that is sheer stupidity; and any nation that chooses to ignore perishes; history of mankind just proves it.

The design is so unified; just see how math is applicable to so many fields. Above all; we know that sitting pieces together directs to an intelligent force organizing them on top of each other.
